About the JBL BassPro 12

Add a blast of bass

JBL's BassPro12 powered subwoofer adds a blast of bass to your vehicle so you can really feel your music's impact as you drive. JBL designed this bass system to shine in the car environment, tuning it for tight, responsive low notes.

Powerful bass from a 12" sub

The BassPro12 enclosure features a JBL 12" sub that really brings the thunder with its polypropylene cone and hi-roll rubber surround. The built-in 150-watt amplifier is matched up perfectly to the sub, so it won't wimp out when it's time to rock. Use an amp wiring kit to power up the BassPro12, and you've turned your car into a concert hall.

Unique port for compact design

The enclosure features JBL's unique Slipstream port, which offers shorter length with a wide-mouth opening that reduces port noise and distortion. This means that JBL can build a more compact enclosure, and still get great performance from this hard-hitting sub. The medium-density fiberboard construction offers strength and durability under extreme conditions, while the carpet covering protects your investment.

Product Research

Features

Amplifier: The power output from the built-in amplifier is 150 watts RMS (450 watts max). The amplifier is counter sunk into the back panel of the enclosure (the heat sink fins protrude approximately 3/8").

Signal Input: The amplifier has both speaker level (harness) and line level (RCA) inputs. The input sensitivity range is 50mV-4V for the line inputs and 400mV-16V for the speaker inputs.

Crossover: The amplifier's low pass crossover point is continuously variable from 40 to 200 Hz; the crossover slope is 12 dB/octave.

Bass Boost: The bass boost circuit provides a variable (0-12 dB) signal boost centered at 45 Hz.

Status LEDs: There are two status indicator LEDs on the amplifier. A green LED lights to indicate the amplifier is turned on and operating normally. A red LED lights to indicate the amplifier's protection circuitry has been activated. The protection circuit activates and the amplifier shuts down when the input voltage (power) is too high or too low, when the amp overheats, and when there is a short between the amp and subwoofer.

Enclosure Dimensions:

  • Width: 22.375"
  • Height: 14.625"
  • Depth (bottom): 11.875"
  • Depth (top): 9.125"

Remote Level Control: The included remote level control lets you adjust the output level of the amplifier from the front of the vehicle. It can be mounted under the dash, in the glove compartment, etc, using the supplied 3M hook-and-loop fastener, and connected with the included 16.5' connection cable terminated in RJ-14 connectors. The remote level control has the following dimensions:

  • Width: 1.125"
  • Height: 0.875"
  • Depth: 2.125" (including the knob and cable)

Controls:

  • Auto Turn-On: Two position switch; on/off; when using the speaker level inputs the amplifier will turn on automatically when it senses an input signal.
  • Phase: Two position switch; 0° or 180°; the sub's phase can be easily inverted.
  • Crossover Frequency: Rotary knob; set the low pass crossover point; continuously variable from 40 Hz to 200 Hz.
  • Bass Boost: Rotary knob; continuously variable from 0 to +12 dB.
  • Gain: Rotary knob; continuously variable from 50mV-4V (line level) or 400mV-16V (speaker level).

Connections:

  • Remote Bass: RJ-14 jack for use with the included remote bass level control
  • Fuse: A single 25 amp ATO style fuse protects the amplifier (spare fuse included)
  • Line Input: Stereo RCA jacks (female)
  • Speaker Input: 4-pin plug for use with the included high-level input harness.
  • Power Input: Screw terminals for power, ground, and remote turn-on; each will accept spade terminals up to 0.33" wide (approximately).

Q
Will this fit behind my back seats of a 2021 Toyota Tundra?
anthony  Apr 11, 2024
1 answer
A
Hey Anthony, thanks for the question. So based on the information we have on file, it looks like you only have about 7in of depth between the back wall and the seat and this box would be almost 12in. It also looks like you have about 11in of height to work with in that location and this box would be over 14in.

Q
Is there a replacement sub for this? Already have this setup but got damaged
matt  Mar 28, 2024
1 answer
A
The exact impedance of the 12" JBL subwoofer used is not listed in the specifications for the JBL BassPro 12" ported powered subwoofer, Matt. If you can remove the damaged subwoofer and determine the exact impedance, we can dial in a good replacement. If you find the subwoofer is 4-ohm impedance, the JBL Stage 122AM below is a solid contender. https://www.crutchfield.com/p_109STAG122/JBL-Stage-122AM.html

How do I install the 4 gauge wire to the sub for the power and ground?

Thank you for your question! We actually have a great article/video that outlines the basics for installing a powered subwoofer. Here's a link to that article: https://www.crutchfield.com/learn/video-installing-powered-subwoofer.html

i got a present second hand the JBL Baspro12 but there was no remote control with cable. JBL Remote level control 16.5' Remote level control cable (RJ-14 connectors on both ends) Does the Sound OrdnanceT B8PT Knob Kit works with the JBL Bas pro 12?

A
Greetings Steven, and thank you for your question. We would not have a definitive answer unless we tried it ourselves. Its possible is the best answer we can give. If you want to be sure, get the JBL. Perhaps you can get the exact remote from them.

Q
What kind of fuse should I use? a 50amp or 60amp?
joshua  Mar 14, 2023
1 answer
A
The BassPro 12 powered sub has a 25A fuse rating, so a 25A or 30A fuse at the battery will work well with it.

Q
ive had this sub for two months and today i believe gave out.Im not sure on how to check for sure or do anything to confirm but theres no power as in no green light and no bass. what do i do?!
blake  Feb 11, 2023
1 answer
A
We provide lifetime Technical Support with every purchase, Blake. If you purchased your gear elsewhere, I am limited in the amount of support I can provide. First thing I would do is check your main power fuse, and all your power and ground connections. If those are all solid, check the auto turn-on switch to make sure it is in the right position. If all of those are good, the subwoofer could be damaged internally and it is time for a replacement, we can certainly help there! I hope this helps.

Q
I brought this sub less than a year ago. And now for some reason it keeps going into protect mode after I turn it up past a certain point. The way the gain and bass boost are currently set has been this way since I got it. Anything you guys know that could help me stop it from going into protect mode?
reek20  Jan 31, 2023
1 answer
A
I do not see any orders linked to your email, Tyrik. We provide lifetime Technical Support for items purchased from us and this is a big reason to shop with us instead of other retailers. There could be numerous reasons why your JBL BassPro 12 sub is going into protection mode. I would advise purchasing the Install Bay 3320 Auto-ranging digital multimeter in the link below. You can check your voltage to the powered subwoofer as getting low current will also put it into protection mode, and that is a great place to start troubleshooting. Check your grounds on the power kit after that to make sure they are in good shape. I hope this helps. https://www.crutchfield.com/p_1203320/Install-Bay-3320.html

Q
Can I wire this speaker in the trunk of a 2018 Honda accord splicing into the rear speaker wires to get a signal without going the the factory head unit? Also if i can wire into the left and right speaker wires for signal will this work for the remote turn off and on as well?
aaron  Jan 05, 2023
1 answer
A
This should be possible depending on the factory audio package for your Accord. The BassPro does feature signal sensing turn-on, which means that it is not necessary to run a remote wire to turn the unit on/off. For help with determining if this will work well with your factory audio system, please reach out to our advisors via online chat or phone at 1-800-324-9695.

Greetings Kaden, and thank you for your question. Absolutely you can, just run another signal into the second sub, and another power/ground wire.

Q
So i'm driving a 1994 Mazda B2300, standard cab. This sub seems like a decent package, but is there anywhere it could fit? I'm not interested in losing a passenger seat or doing anything major, I just want it to fit behind or under the seat, but it doesn't matter where as long as it doesn't get in the way of practicality.
kyle  Oct 18, 2022
1 answer
A
This sub is a killer setup for the price, that's for sure Kyle. We won't be able to tell you where to put it sadly, and depending on how much space you have behind the seats is really the main question. Depending on how much space is back there you might be able to squeeze this in, or something like this Rockford Fosgate P300 box in the link below. This bad boy is a little slimmer, but still bangs and could fit better. I hope this helps! https://www.crutchfield.com/p_575P30010T/Rockford-Fosgate-P300-10T.html

Q
I have a 07 Tacoma with a factory head unit and a factory sub and Amp. Can I swap the factory sub and Amp with the jbl?
matthew  Sep 12, 2022
1 answer
A
It would not be possible to replace the factory amplifier with the amplifier built into this sub. Your factory amplifier is more complex and has several more channels to support all of the speakers in your audio system. Please give our advisors a call at 1-800-324-9695 for in-depth help with this project.

Q
I have a kenwood head unit that has sub out. Is that where I connect rca cables and run them to a powered sub ?
paul  Aug 25, 2022
1 answer
A
Greetings Paul, and thank you for the question. You would be correct, run RCAs from the Kenwood to the powered sub, and run a power cable for the sub to the battery, then ground the powered sub. This JBL sub is requiring an 8 gauge amp kit (item 142PA8BX), there is no amp wiring included with the sub.
hogan  Aug 26, 2022 (Staff)
Q
I purchased this from somewhere else, and I cant for the life of me find the correct bass knob that has the same connection as the amp?
steven  Jul 16, 2022
1 answer
A
No worries there Steven, we can still help! This JBL BassPro 12 Ported powered sub uses an RJ-14 size connector. Our Sound Ordnance bass knob in the link below does use the same connector and could be an option to try, it's not a guarantee that it will work however. You can always add bass knob control to any amp/powered sub by using the AudioControl LC2i pro in the second link below. This Line output converter processes the sound better if you are connected to a factory radio and comes with a bass knob setup included. You can even mount it on the JBL box and tap into it's power easily. You've got options Steven! https://www.crutchfield.com/p_777B8PTKNB/Sound-Ordnance-B8PT-Knob-Kit.html https://www.crutchfield.com/p_161LC2IPRO/AudioControl-LC2i-PRO.html

Q
can i add this to the already 4 speakers in the truck? will i need a bigger amp?
marwan  Jul 12, 2022

A
Thankfully you won't need a bigger amplifier to help with adding this subwoofer to your truck. It's a powered subwoofer with an amplifier built into the enclosure.

Q
will this work with Kicker 46CK8 wiring kit?
kyle  May 13, 2022
1 answer
A
Any 8 gauge wiring would work. I'd advise crimping the wire into any supplied terminal fork connectors though. The board where connections are made on the bass pro 12 are awful for fitting bare wire.
evan  May 13, 2022
Q
Is it ok to use a 4 gauge wire kit instead of 8 gauge?
evan  Mar 26, 2022
1 answer
A
Yup! Should be totally fine. Be sure to install an appropriate in-line fuse.
zane  Mar 26, 2022
Q
Why would the sub turn off and on randomly?
sabastian  Mar 24, 2022
1 answer
A
My first thing to check regarding this would be the protection light. Is that bulb lighting up? Or is the amp itself just turning off occasionally. I'd double check all of your main connections. But the best thing to do might be to trouble shoot this issue with crutchfield support too.
evan  Mar 24, 2022
Q
This has speaker inputs. I only have a factory sub in the rear deck. Can I power it from those 2 wires or does it require 2 sets of wires that I'd need to run from my rear doors?
matthew  Jan 21, 2022
2 answers
A
I think you can do it with 2 wires cause I think those connections are just to tell the sub when to turn on and off.
shawn terrell  Jan 23, 2022
A
If the signal going to your existing sub is low pass (highs cut out), you might be able to convert that signal to an RCA and power up your new JBL. If the existing speaker wires are full range, use the hi-pass connector that came with the JBL. Hope this helps.

Q
So can the prebuilt-in amp power other speakers in the car?
colin  Jan 13, 2022
3 answers
A
No, it has no outputs, just inputs
ronald  Jan 18, 2022
A
No, it only powers its own speaker
christopher  Jan 18, 2022
A
Could it? Maybe. Should it? Probably not. It's very possible that the amp is built and filtered specifically for low range frequencies and not optimal for full- range speakers. Besides, the amp is matched to the need of the sub driver, so pulling power out to drive other speakers could lead to clipping. You'd be much happier with a separate amp for the rest of your system and just use this unit as it is intended.
james  Jan 16, 2022
Q
How long do I need to wait before turning it all the way up?
stone  Dec 02, 2021
2 answers
A
You may not WANT to turn it up all the way when you first get it; it's pretty powerful. However, the standard break-in period is something like 20 hours of use, with full break-in after 100 hours. I've had mine for about half a year now with hundreds of hours of playtime, and I haven't broken anything turning it up loud.
zane  Dec 02, 2021

I'm sure Crutchfield will answer this but I have always been told to play moderately for a couple weeks and then after that have at it...

I would check all your wire connections to make sure there isn't a electrical problem, but most definitely would just call Crutchfield tech support they can walk you through and hopefully figure out the issue.

Will this JBL 12" Slipstream Powered Sub and box fit in the hatch back trunk area in my 1986 Chevrolet Camaro IROC-Z? (3rd gen)
webnizzle  Aug 21, 2021

We do not have the measurements of the available space in 1986 Camaro's to check if it can fit. The dimensions of this unit are 22-3/8" wide x 14-5/8" tall x 11-7/8" deep at the bottom and narrowing to 9-1/8" deep at the top

What kind of vehicle is this going in. I installed mine in a 2019 keep wrangler and the kit was all I needed
bryan  Mar 12, 2021
A
Make sure the 8 au comes with a waterproof fuse holder, which needs to be within 18" of your car battery. You will need to run the supplied wire for the remote gain control for the sub. I would run a set of RCA cables and a remote turn on lead close to your head unit just in case, especially if you already have an aftermarket head unit, or plan on adding later.
chris  Mar 11, 2021
A
The wiring kit I bought didn't include the RCA cables, so I would check if the one you bought includes them. You want to figure out where you will get your RCA and remote turn-on signals from. Reach your specific car and see your options. You may have to pull out your head unit and plug in there, or use line out signal converter from your mids in your rear deck. For my car, there was a company which made a wiring harness which hooked up to the factory amplifier in the trunk pre-wired giving me my RCA and remote turn on wires which made things very easy, clean and quick, it took 20 minutes total to install this box. With this harness I just needed a 3' rca cables set if you go into your head unit you may want a 25', or maybe 10' if you tap into speaker wires with signal converter. Do some quick research on your specific car model and year, then get some rca cables.

How do I hook this amp and speaker combo up in my 2019 Jeep JL that has no rca hook ups?

Crutchfield can sell you an adapter that takes input from your existing factory speakers and convert that to the RCA you need I think it's called a line-level adapter.
