Sony NW-A55 Walkman

High-res audio entertainment

The Sony NW-A55 Walkman lets you enjoy high-res music files, such as downloads from sites like HDtracks. And it lets you listen to your favorite radio station or catch the big game through its built-in FM tuner.

Use Bluetooth to stream your music to a set of wireless headphones. The player's built-in rechargeable battery can deliver up to 45 hours of operation, so you can listen all day and then some.

Support for high-resolution audio files

The NW-A55 is compatible with high-res PCM-based files (up to 32-bit/384kHz), DSD (Direct Stream Digital) files, Apple Lossless, and other formats. And it delivers great sound from your MP3s. The player is also MQA-compatible.

High-fidelty Bluetooth streaming

The player's Bluetooth is enhanced by Sony's LDAC technology. This allows the wireless signal to retain more musical detail with compatible Sony speakers and headphones. We recommend pairing this player with Sony's best Bluetooth headphones — the WH-1000XM3 wireless noise-cancelers — for a super-sounding portable listening rig.

Selectable sound enhancements

How do you like your music? The 'A55 has a 6-band equalizer, so you can fine tune the sound of your music. For low-resolution files, such as MP3s, the player has ClearAudio+. This feature enhances the sound of compressed audio. The VPT (Surround) setting gives you a much wider stereo soundfield.

And if you're both new and old school, select the Vinyl Processor. It gives your music the warm, rich sound of an analog LP. it even has a hint of surface noise as well.

Storage for high-res files

The 'A55 features 16GB of built-in storage. If you need more memory, the player's microSD card slot can accommodate up to a 128GB card. That gives you up to 144GB of storage, plenty for high-resolution files as well as CD-quality audio files. And of course, you can carry extra cards with you for an even bigger music library.

Product Research

Features

Overview: The Sony NW-A55 is a Walkman A-series digital music player, capable of playing high-resolution audio files up to 32-bit / 384kHz. The NW-A55 has Bluetooth Audio Streaming for wirelessly listening to your favorite music, either transmitted from the player to your Bluetooth headphones or speakers, or transmitted from your smartphone or tablet to the player. You can also use the unit as a USB-DAC to stream music from your computer and bypassing the computer's digital-to-analog converter. The device is equipped with a 3.5mm mini jack output for headphones. The unit features a 3.1" LCD screen, and an internal 16 GB flash memory. You can add even more memory by inserting an optional microSD card.

Supported Audio Formats: The NW-A55 Hi-Res Walkman can support multiple digital audio formats:

MP3 (.mp3) 32-320 kbps (incl. VBR) at 32, 44.1, and 48 kHz

Construction: The NW-A55 is precision-engineered and constructed with high-quality materials and components for superior sound quality. It has a rigid aluminum milled frame which shields the internal circuitry from electrical noise. Internally, the NW-A55 uses a gold-plated circuit board and contact springs for low impedance, which leads to better bass and clear midrange response. To minimize signal loss, the circuit board uses audio-grade, lead-free solder with a small amount of gold for optimal signal transfer.

Side-mounted Controls: The unit has a row of physical controls along the right edge of the player. Buttons include music playback controls (play/pause, skip forward (hold down for fast forward), skip backward (hold down for fast rewind), Volume up, Volume down, and Power. A sliding Hold switch locks the playback operating buttons and volume controls to avoid accidental commands.

Memory: The NW-A55 has a 16 GB built-in internal memory for storing your high-resolution music files. If more storage is needed, there is a slot for an optional microSD memory card. Cards up to 128 GB are compatible. Using a higher capacity memory card may work, but isn't guaranteed. Based on an average of 4 minutes per song, the built-in memory can hold the following number of songs:

  NW-A55 (16 GB)

MP3 (128 kbps)

3,300 songs
AAC (256 kbps)

1600 songs

FLAC (44.1 kHz/16-bit)

300 songs

FLAC (96 kHz/24-bit)

90 songs

FLAC (192kHz/24-bit)

40 songs

DSD (2.8224 MHz/1-bit) 70 songs
Note: The actual usable memory is approximately 12.26 GB. A portion of the memory is used for data management functions.

Bluetooth/NFC: With built-in Bluetooth 4.2, you can stream your music files wirelessly from compatible devices to the player, or stream music to your Bluetooth headphones or speakers, up to 30 feet away. Devices, such as a smartphone or Bluetooth headphones, that have the NFC (Near-Field Communication) function, can be automatically turned on, and paired with the player, by simply touching the device to the N-mark on the back of the player. The NW-A55 is equipped with LDAC, which uses the conventional Bluetooth connection, but transfers data at up to 999 kbps. That's three times the transfer rate of other audio profiles, which results in higher fidelity. In addition, the unit supports aptX and aptX HD.

USB-DAC Function: The NW-A55 lets you enhance the sound of the music stored on your computer without transferring it to the player. The USB-DAC function bypasses the usually inferior Digital-to-Analog Converter (DAC) of your computer, using the higher quality DAC in the NW-A55. You'll need to install a USB-DAC compatible application to your computer, such as Music Center for PC, or Hi-Res Audio Player for Mac. When the USB-DAC function is active, you cannot listen to music via Bluetooth, or turn on the Ambient Sound Mode or Noise Canceling function.

FM Radio Tuner: The NW-A55 has a built-in FM radio tuner that allows you to listen to FM broadcasts through your headphones. You can preset up to 30 radio stations, either manually or automatically. Receivable stations can be scanned by pressing the < or > buttons. Scan sensitivity can be changed, if needed, plus you can switch from stereo to mono output. The player uses the cord of connected headphones as an antenna. Sound quality settings do not apply to FM radio.

Ambient Sound / Noise Canceling: The Ambient Sound Mode and Noise Canceling functions are found on select models of Sony headphones. Ambient Sound Mode lets you hear ambient sound while you wear headphones, so you can safely pay attention to your surroundings. The Noise Canceling function reduces ambient noise, allowing you to hear your music more clearly without distraction. The NW-A55 works with the compatible headphones to activate the Ambient Sound Mode and Noise Canceling functions. Compatible headphones include: IER-NW500N/NE and MDR-NW750N/NE.

Sound Quality Settings: You can adjust the sound quality with the following Sound Quality Settings:

  • 6-band Equalizer/EQ Presets: You can adjust the sound at 6 individual EQ bands at 60Hz, 400Hz, 1kHz, 2.5kHz, 6.3kHz, and 16kHz. The adjustment can be made from -10 to +10dB, and saved as Custom 1 or Custom 2 presets. Other available presets include Bright, Excited, Mellow, Relaxed, or Vocal.
  • DSEE HX: DSEE HX uses an algorithm to analyze the music, and automatically replace the "lost" information. DSEE HX (Digital Sound Enhancement Engine) gives your highly-compressed music files new life so they sound almost as good as true Hi-Res Audio quality. DSEE HX can be turned on or off, as desired.
  • DC Phase Linearizer: This function makes low frequency phase characteristics more similar to a traditional analog amplifier. It can be turned on/off, as desired.
  • VPT (Surround): The VPT (Virtualphones Technology) function is a proprietary sound processing technology from Sony, and applies a surround effect and enriches the sound quality of the audio playback.
  • Vinyl Processor: The Vinyl Processor can add the character of vinyl recordings to your digital recordings with subtle reproduction of the low-frequency resonance, tone-arm resonance, and surface noise.
  • Dynamic Normalizer: The Dynamic Normalizer moderates the change in volume between tracks to minimize differences in volume level.

Rechargeable Battery: The NW-A55 has a built-in Lithium-Ion rechargeable battery for exceptional stamina. After a 4-hour full recharging time (via USB power), the unit's estimated battery life is as follows:

Music Format Approximate Battery Life
Ambient Sound Noise Canceling
MP3 128 kbps 30 hrs ON, 45 hrs OFF 37 hrs ON, 45 hrs OFF
AAC 256 kbps 27 hrs ON, 39 hrs OFF 33 hrs ON, 39 hrs OFF
FLAC 96kHz/24-bit 27 hrs ON, 39 hrs OFF 32 hrs ON, 39 hrs OFF

Bluetooth MP3 128 kbps 20 hrs Transmitter / 15 hrs Receiver mode
Bluetooth FLAC 96kHz/24-bit 13 hrs Transmitter / 12 hrs Receiver mode

WM-PORT / System Requirements: The unit has a bottom-mounted, 22-pin WM-PORT interface between the device and your computer. With the included 42" WM-PORT-to-USB cable, you can charge the battery and transfer music content. Downloadable software is available for use with the NW-A55: Music Center for PC (Windows 7, 8.1, 10) or Content Transfer for Mac (macOS 10.10 - 10.13). You can also transfer content directly by dragging and dropping music files from Windows Explorer (Windows) or Mac Finder (Mac).

Customer Q&A

Q
Are there any compatibility issues with Macs. My music is on a laptop. Will the player show up on my Mac and can I then drag and drop or do I need to get it on the SD card? I saw where it's best to format the card with the player - does this cause any compatibility issues?
mark  Dec 11, 2021
1 answer
A
I have a 2017 iMac and use an SD card. When the Sony is plugged into a USB port the player says: "turn on USB mass storage", hit "ok" and the SD card shows up on the desktop. Double clicking on the SD card now on the desktop reveals a folder inside named "music". Double clicking on this opens the music folder and I drag and drop audio files in there. After loading the files into the music folder I then eject the SD card off the desktop. On the Sony, I then hit "Turn off USB mass storage" and a database is created with the audio files. I believe that if you don't use an SD card, the procedure is similar but you're using the smaller storage capacity built into the player.

Yes, you can connect the cable to a USB port on the PC. If you only have USB-C ports on the PC, you will need a USB 3.0 to USB-C converter. I don't know about connecting to a Mac.

How many Oms can the NW-A55 Walkman handle?

This just has a standard head phone jack. No speaker outputs.

I cannot find anywhere that Sony states the max ohms that can be driven. The only specs that is listed is maximum power of 35 mW at 16 ohms. I have tried a pair of over the ear headphones that are rated at 38 ohms and they worked fine. Obviously higher impedance headphones will not be driven as well because of the low power output.

Is this product has Google app store?

The Walkman A100 Series uses a version of the Android operating system to provide streaming music features. But be aware these units cost about twice as much, use up the battery twice as fast for the WiFi and have all of the privacy issues of smartphones. The A50 series (the player advertised here) is just a simple Sony OS "off the grid" music player. It's easy to be confused as the form factors are similar, but the A100 series is slightly larger in real life.

It could work since the walkman goes into mass storage mode but it depends also on your HU I connect mine with the bluetooth and it works fine there is two modes to make sure the volume control works... This is a very good device...

It may be compatible with some systems but I haven't had success with that. The AUX connection works well and you can control most functions with the buttons on the side of the unit. I can find the by touch without looking. Hope this helps.

I checked in all of the menus and can't find a setting for Mono output. So short answer no. Maybe you can find a mono headphone or some kind of adapter.
frank  Dec 15, 2020
A
With a proper jack it should work. The jack must prevent the other channel from shorting out. The sound will be a little flat.
michael j  Dec 14, 2020

There is no switch on the Walkman to allow mono only. Your don't need to be listening to music at work anyway.

You will need a USB 3.0 to USB-C converter. It should work. I connect my walkman to my PC by connecting the cable to the converter. It works.
edward  Nov 08, 2020
A
The plug into the Walkman is a proprietary shape with the other end is standard USB. You would need a female USB to USB-C cable to connect it to the car stereo.
william  Nov 07, 2020
A
The unit itself does not have a USB-C, but I am fairly certain you could purchase a connector to make it work. I purchased this as a gift. it is used through portable stereo with a connection wire that was included, but I haven't seen it used in vehicle yet. I'd be happy to confirm if you would like.

I'm feeding a portable SONY CFS-1030 receiver with a 3.5mm male to RCA male connectors with no problem. I'd check the input signal strength requirements on the receiver I was feeding first. Customer support could address that better than me. Hope this helps
todd  Aug 31, 2020
A
Yes! I had no problems hooking up the player to Bluetooth capable receivers.
charles  Aug 31, 2020
A
Yes. If your receiver is like mine and does not have bluetooth capabilities (Yamaha A-S501), you can buy a 3.5MM to RCA cable and use one of the extra input channels to run this player through your receiver. Since I don't listen to radio, I have mine plugged into the Tuner channel on my receiver.
john  Aug 31, 2020
A
Definitely. You will need a single 3.5 plug for the Sony and left/ right channels for the receiver. I also believe you can use Bluetooth if the receiver is equipped.
john  Aug 31, 2020
A
I don't believe output is designed for that or is strong enough. I tried with aux cord & no results. Even if it did you would have to crank up considerably and sound quality would be subpar as well. Sound through headphones & Bluetooth is real good.

Q
Do I need a DAC with this Walkman?
jose arnaldo  Dec 16, 2020
4 answers
A
This Walkman has the DAC feature integrated. It can only be used as a DAC for the music in your computer. You will need to download the Sony program to use it. (I can't include the Sony link, because it is blocked on the Crutchfield site) (You will not be able to listen to your Walkman music directly in an analog system) If you want a DAC to listen to your Walkman music I recommend this product https://www.crutchfield.com/p_703DGNFLYR/AudioQuest-DragonFly-Red-v1-0.html
virginia  Dec 19, 2020
A
No, just a really good set of headphones. I really love this little unit.
mark  Dec 17, 2020
A
The 55 is a DAC, at least you can use it as one. Sony is quite proud of the DAC they have in the Na55, and it does sound pretty good. But not only do you not need a DAC for this but you can't really use one since there is no digital out. You can use the onboard DAC however by plugging the proprietary cable into the USB of a computer or any device with USB out.
billy s  Dec 17, 2020
A
This Walkman includes a DAC. When plugged into a USB port on my Windows 10 computer, any sound playing on the computer will come through the Walkman DAC to my wired headphones or earbuds. When the DAC is operating, the Bluetooth function on the Walkman is disabled. So, wireless headphones cannot use the Walkman DAC. I have read comments on the internet saying that the DAC only works with the Sony Music Center for PC software. But this is not correct. Under Windows 10, the Walkman DAC operates regardless of whether you are using the Sony software or not.

Q
Hi! The music files downloaded to the sd card that you use with the NW-A55 walkman are displayed, and work in the same way when you use the user interface as those stored in the internal storage. When you add external storage using a sd card, do all those files show up and work the same way to a player with more internal memory, or do they have to be handled independently from the internally stored files? Excuse my English, it is not my main language.
jerry  Oct 16, 2020

I use the memory card exclusively, however the music samples on the device from Sony show in the same library. So to me it all appears seamless.

I think you question is if the files from the sd card and the ones in the walkman's memory show together once you use the walkman? Yes they do.the files in the internal memory and the sd card will show in your music list and will work as one source By the way I love this product and I have no regrets on getting it I hope this helps...
adan  Nov 11, 2020

They work the same way as the internal memory and are displayed as one list.

Yes it does have FM, BUT you must use a wired earphone to use the FM. It will not work with Wireless ear phones.

If it's the nwa 55 (and it probably is) then it does have an FM tuner, one of the reasons I bought it instead of the newer android model, which does not. Listen to a lot of talk radio.

Yes, it has a FM tuner. This is a excellent player. Good sound.

My recently purchased A55 (not A55L) does have an FM tuner. But remember: you can only use it with earbuds/headphones, because the cord acts as the antenna.
