Garmin has two options for this. On a micro-sd card or as a download to your own micro-sold card inserted in the device. Download right are lifetime for a single device. If it gets corrupted just download again. That already happened to me once. I did not format the second card i just used it as is. Once it went bad I formatted and re-downloaded.
