Oh Captain, Captain
Probably His Strongest Album Out Of His Last Three(Shiny Beast 76', Doc At The Radar Station 80', Ice Cream For Crow 82') The recording On This Album Is Really Good It Sounds Like The Remastered 2006 Issues Of The Cds And This Album Is Probably One Of His Best. Captain Struck Gold With This Album And Probably Should've Made More Albums Like This He Was Slowly Getting back After The Two Commercial Failing Albums Unconditionally Guaranteed and Bluejeans & Moonbeams He Made A Come Back With Shiny Beast In 1976 With Great Vocals On Bat Chain Puller And The Poem Of An Old Ape Called Apes Ma. Captain Then Released This Abum In 1980 The Vocals Stronger,The Music More Experimental Every Thing In This Album Couldn't Be Any Better t Was The Perfect Mixture With Little Of The Experimental Music From Trout Mask and Lick My Decals Off and The More Accesible Style Of Spotlight Kid And Clear Spot. It Is Mostly Similar To The Album Lick My Decals Off,Baby. If Your A Vinyl Collector Of Captain The Sound On This Vinyl Is Fantastic,Crisp,And Clear.

I loved Doc At The Radar Station when it first came out. I can think of much of the music that came out at around that time, some of which I also really liked. However, hearing Doc now again (and in this beautifully remastered version) really drives home the extent to which much of the music of that time has faded into the realm of easily dated nostalgia (of which I am not a fan). Yet this album (and most of Beefheart's music) has suffered no such fate. When you listen to this material, you realize that—other than some technical characteristics in the way that, say, the drums were originally recorded—this record could've been recorded yesterday! It sounds so fresh, and sonically is of course so much better than the original anyway. But the material itself and its conception, and the aplomb and love with which it was performed, is as good today as it was back then. And just as 'new'.
I'm a musician, and like myself, most musicians I know don't tend to listen to something over and over again unless there's something they're trying to transcribe, learn to play, etc. But after picking up this new remastered version of this record yesterday, I listened to it five times all the way through, just mesmerized by the enormity and beauty of it. At the same time, it's a brutal reminder of how difficult it would be (and is) today for any recording this 'experimental' to gain any kind of meaningful recognition in the world. Today it's easier for any of us to record and get our stuff out into the world, yet access is no guarantee of proliferation and recognition. But forget everything I just said and go listen for yourself. In the words of Beefheart ('Ashtray Heart'), 'Somebody's had too much to think'!

Now, that of course doesn`t mean it is easy to listen to. None of his music [soundscapes actually] are easy listening. You have to consciously commit,in little pieces at first. It probably helps if you liked his vocal abilities early on in his career. It probably depends where you got on the BEEFHEART TRAIN in the first place.
But to my ear,a lot of previous sounds are reintroduced and seem to fit better this time around, Ah,maybe it is only familiarity at work here. Fact is he was one of a kind no doubt. I always suggest to people new to Don & BAND try LISTENING to The Spotlight Kid or Clear Spot as an introduction first. Trout Mask Replica and others can be licked later on. PUN or no pun intended. My age 72 and counting

As if Captain Beefheart leaves any doubt how great he was, this is one of my favorite. Free jazz to Rock mixed with great dadaist lyrics, truly a classic.

A perfect album. The originality, combined with the quality, makes for repeated listening that never grows tiresome. I've known half of these songs for the past 20 years because they were featured on compilation releases. I finally completed my Beefheart collection with Doc At The Radar Station's arrival earlier this week. The songs I was unfamiliar with didn't disappoint. There are at least five vital songs on this album: Hot Head, Ashtray Heart, Sue Egypt, Best Batch Yet & Dirty Blue Gene. Each one is chill-inducing. The Captain's creepy voice, the band's infectious grooves, the eerie instrumentation and the mysterious lyrics make it feel like a magical, spooky Halloween night every time I listen. If I put this on a list along with the other great albums I have heard in my lifetime, the only similarity this would have to any of them would be that it was featured on the same list as them. Got me?

Five stars indeed, but then how many stars would you give the stars themselves? A heavy comparison I know, but then where else do you see such whirling chaos of imagination but in those great enigmas of creation? You watch a lion devour an antelope in the blood red dawn of an emerging twilight, a flower blooms and blossoms, the hummingbird sings. How many silent sound waves from that hummingbirds wings? Steady heavy drone of all continuous, time turns another, mother bleeding forth a child. She wails with sorrow so deep it turns to joy. A gravity heart beat then repeat, light-year of miracles between our eyes. Such is the enigmatic trauma of magnificent life. Is it beautiful? It has to be. Or at least it will be. Someday.

Another great album from Captain Beefheart (Don Van Vliet) and the Magic Band. This album rivals just about any other you can name in his catalog...for me it's neck and neck with " Ice Cream for Crow " in fact i'd be fine if it was a double album, since i usually play them together in the same playlist anyway...
the musicians are top notch, and provide an excellent back drop to Don's varied style of slam poetry, and abstract visions of verbiage and adjectivity...
as much as i love his older stuff from the 70's, it's classic no doubt...but this album and the " Ice Cream for Crow " album stand out as his best work to date.

The CD came in perfect condition and it’s essential Beefheart. It was the second to last album he made and although it does not have the original band behind him, their reverence for his music comes through. If you are a fan this one fits the bill.

5.0 out of 5 stars A Great Return to Form
Reviewed in Canada on February 29, 2024
This disc represents the Captain's return from the unfortunate foray into the world of commercial pop music, to what he does best; surreal blues if you will. The (mostly) new Magic Band has captured the essence of Trout Mask era extremely well. A most enjoyable disc that bears repeated listenings.

5.0 out of 5 stars Text-Book For The Out-There That's Out There.

Possibly my favourite CB album. I remember hearing excerpts from it that John Peel played a lot at the time. You knew straight away this was an extraordinary artist, an individual voice. I loved Magazine's b-side version of 'I Love Ya (You Dummy!)' And I had loved The Fall since 1978, because of JPeel, again, so I was used to wierder sounds, unfamiliar rhythms. Anything post-punk tried to do, the Captain had been there before and planted a flag. Even the artwork predicts 1977/78, although this, along with 'Shiny Beast (Bat Chain Puller)' were released a little after that, Beefheart had been at all this stuff for donkey's years. CB is one of those artists where it's hard to pinpoint an actual 'best', as all his albums (even 'Bluejeans And Moonbeams') have their moments. I would class 'Trout Mask Replica' as not only his finest artistic statement, but one of the world's greatest, also. There is practically nothing wrong with 'Safe As Milk' for my money, and 'Shiny Beast' has a really inclusive feel, for me. But, it isn't just about the music, or the poetry. The Captain paints with them, and gets things arranged the way that best suits his compostitional use of colours. This just happens to be one of his finest paintings. It's the text-book for most of the out-there Indie records out there.

5.0 out of 5 stars Digital Re-master
Reviewed in Germany on March 10, 2010

5.0 out of 5 stars
Reviewed in Japan on August 26, 2011
