There is such value in this book! First, it is short so you can get through it in a few hours. Yet the message is powerful, not loud shouting in your face powerful that makes you feel worthless or frightened. But conversational, clear, succinct, amusing at times, and the kind that lets you into Sandy and her daughter's lives. She paints a picture that you can see, believe is true, and inspires you to want the world to do better. I've read other books on racism, by well known best selling authors and had primarily negative take aways, sometimes with fear and concern for the underlying themes of violence, condoned, hoped for and even encouraged. In Sandy's book you get a look at racism through the eyes of a mother and daughter - the subtle and blatant, the everyday rather than the occasional front page police brutality, not condemning society and casting blame, but asking for thoughtful understanding and everyone's involvement in change. Little things do matter - not grand gestures, but everyday things that will enable us all to communicate and live together better. Sandy doesn't proclaim to know what needs to be done. She trusts in her ability to provide the picture and the good of human nature to make changes when awareness comes. I've learned from this book, about things I thought I understood, but now see differently.

Sandy Reid’s book, Conversations With My Daughter About Racism, is a little dose of reality. This book, that recounts some of the conversations with her teenage daughter D’aisha, about the realities of life in this moment takes that first step for the rest of us. Conversations about racism in America, and social mores, that need to happen in all families of all ages, colors, and stripes. Sandy is honest with her feelings and answers, whether she has to hold back the Mama Bear or her tears. This isn’t an in depth discussion of race relations, it is an invitation to start the conversation we all need to have…..today.

Sandy Reid shares honest and from-the-heart answers to her 14-year-old daughter’s questions about comments and reactions based on skin color. Being able to talk with our children and youth with candor and love about real-life issues is a gift. Sandy and her daughter provide valuable insights for all of us.

The book, infused with a mother’s love, honesty, and humor and a teenager’s desire to understand the world in which she lives, is a quick and easy read which can help guide our own conversations about race with children and teenagers.

Sandy's writes like she is talking to you. When reading this powerful book, you feel like you are having an important conversation with a friend. Sandy shares from her heart many important and sometimes humorous stories about her conversations with her daughter. She also challenges the reader to reflect on this important conversation in a way that is approachable and without judgement. Highly recommend, this is an important book!

This book was a great and easy read. It was intriguing, genuine and the conversations were relatable. I would encourage all parents to read and discuss the book with their middle and high school aged children.

Sandy writes very well. Given the subject, I was expecting this book to be dry and depressing. It wasn't. It was engaging and entertaining. Yes, much of it made me sad or angry, but the author also succeeded in injecting some humor. It really struck me how disconcerting the sight of a Confederate flag in the South can be to a "Black" person. (Like the author, I use the term "Black" because it seems to be the most-accepted term, but I still wonder why, when it's even necessary to make a distinction, we don't use the term "brown."

This isn't a book complaining about white privilege. It's a book that uses stories to illustrate how some people's wrong-headed assumptions about people who have darker skin than they do can negatively impact the lives of people who have dark skin.

No matter what our skin color, we should all teach our children what Sandy does at some point:
"I teach my children to love everyone as Christ would want us to do. I also teach them that not everyone will like them, simply because of the color of their skin. This is a tough reality that brought me to tears when I expressed it to my innocent 7-year-old son. To make the hard decision to take his innocence away before someone else did was one of the hardest, but necessary decisions I have ever made." The sad reality though, is that if our kids are "White," they are much less likely to be disliked or mistreated because of the color of their skin and they need to understand that Jesus died for every single person equally and it is an offense to him for us to treat other people as beneath us for any reason. And we should all speak out if we see anyone else mistreating another person.
