Nonetheless, I figured I'd gotten almost a decade out of the device and would find another similar to it and stick with TomTom, a brand I have trusted. I bought the VIA 1525SE as it seemed to have all of the same qualities (size, functionality, "lifetime" maps, etc) and received it quickly. I charged it and then plugged it in to the computer to update the maps.
It required firstly to update a file called NAV4. This initial update took almost 10 hours to complete. The device restarted and began updating the maps through MyDrive Connect. It gave an estimated download time of 2 hours the first time. It timed out at 39% and began again. Another two hours, time out, rinse repeat.
After spending an entire weekend trying to get the maps to complete, I gave up and after another restart, I tried to operate the device. No maps installed, it says. I scoured TomTom's website for support and was repeatedly directed to their forums for support. I tried emailing through their site, but the "submit" button only refreshed the screen. I finally found a phone number, called and spoke to a scripted young lady who could do little more than re-direct me to the MyDriveConnect. Absolutely nothing in the way of support.
Finally, I at least got MyDriveConnect to not begin automatically updating and was able to get it to briefly display "MyContent" and found the message that the drive is corrupt. I tried to "Repair" but that was greyed out, as was the "Uninstall" option. And unfortunately, there's not enough file space to allow for a download.
Another call to their scripted staff who once more directed me to the forums - where Average Joe Blow could possibly give me the answer that the manufacturer could not. What kind of support is that? Genius I guess, they don't have to employ technical assist and just allow the keyboard warriors to take on the job for free, and if it fails - they've complete deniability.
I have to find another GPS company now that I can trust, it will never again be TomTom.
The screen size still isn't as large as I would have liked but I can live with that. I DON'T LIKE FACT THAT THE VOLUME IS SO WOEFULLY LACKING.., AND NO I AM NOT HARD OF HEARING!
Top reviews from other countries
The mount is basic as they are with all other GPS units and it sticks relatively well on clean glass or the mounting disk. Took a bit to figure out I could swap the mounting ball for a dash mount. The on-line downloadable manual is actually pretty good. But you have to read it first. Charging was effortless and quick. No complaints so far. 5 stars for delivery and quality, 4 for battery life and ease of use. 3 only for Touch screen because with a long route and way points the scrolling function seems to get a little stuttered. i do like the double tap to zoom, however, the long tap to access menus sometimes refuses to cooperate. In short, the touch screen could still use some improvement or the underlying processors need some upgrading.
Overall, good unit, reasonably priced.
