I saw the DolfinPack and decided to give it a shot figuring there is no way it could be worse than the status quo. I love, love, love this thing:
1. It fits! It stays in its place and doesn't bounce around. HURRAY!
2. It holds a substantial amount of water.
3. It's easy to clean off. I hose it down after each run, hang it and it's ready to rock the next weekend.
4. The DolfinPack customer service is outstanding. The straps started tearing away from the pack after my first run with it (probably 2.25h) so I contacted them. They replied promptly, asked for photos and sent out a new pack (I was told to save the water reservoir) since it was considered a manufacturer's defect. I borrowed my mom's sewing machine and added an extra line of stitching to the straps, just to be safe and I haven't had an issue since.
The only thing I would suggest is putting cheap arm warmers over the straps if you have sensitive skin - especially where the straps meet on the hard plastic. Also, it chaffed against my back in one area during my first run as I wore a tank top, but I've remembered to wear Body Glide in that area since and it hasn't occurred again.
I can't speak to its performance for water sports, but if you are a runner, this is a great companion for those long, hot runs.
No mud stayed inside due to the drain holes in the bottom so I had zero added weight from mud and muck.
The water storage capacity is perfect. I did not fill mine completely full so I had a bit of space to include a waterproof bag with a tracker inside for my husband to follow my progress with. There is no additional storage space otherwise. I'm a bit torn on whether I would want that or not as it could compromise how the pack fits and drains but for a longer race, I will need to have fuel like GU or NUUN tabs with me so I may need to find another way to do that.
I did have to use a bit more pressure on this bite valve to get water out but it wasn't anything that affected my thoughts on the pack.
This thing was completely coated with mud after the race but washed clean in only a couple minutes with cool water and a cleaning brush. This will now be the pack I use for every race I run. I have a beast in August and a half marathon in Sept. and I plan to use this pack for all my OCRs.
Thank you Dolfin Pack!! I was not paid to write this or given anything for a good review so this is what I truly think of the product.
Since this worked so well, I am also looking at the hydration armband for short runs. Once you find something this good, you stick with ti!
Good: They're not lying when they say this thing is comfortable. The neoprene material is far superior comfort-wise to the canvas / nylon of your typical CamelBak or similar hydration packs. It's not quite gentle enough to wear shirtless during a long run--you'll still get hot spots. But during a walk or casual hike, it can't be beat. And it's definitely minimalist: With a full bladder, you might have room for a Clif bar and keys in the top area of the pack, but not much more. If you aim is to carry water and nothing more, this is your pack.
Bad: I'll start at the beginning and work my way forward--The lack of a secondary belt closer to the waist makes this pack prone to bouncing, particularly when the bladder is mostly full. When using it for a more kinetic activity, like running (especially on undulating trails), the pack bounces up and down non-stop, forcing you to cinch it as tight as possible to prevent rubs and general irritation/distraction. The bouncing also has an unfortunate side effect of destroying all of the exterior parts of the bag where fabric meets (e.g., where the shoulder straps meet the main pack, etc.). I've used this pack a half dozen times including two lengthy trail runs; you can see the results in the photos.
My bag has rips all over it where the neoprene has separated to expose the straps underneath.
Other: As others have mentioned, if you are a smaller person, this pack may not size small enough for you. As a 5'11", 165lb male that wears a size 39 suit jacket, I wear the pack's chest straps fastened all the way across--that is, with no under-velcro showing. The only way to get it tighter would be to have part of the over strap dangling in the breeze. Granted, I'm wearing it tight to limit jostling during running.
