DGS-1100-05PD: Smart Managed PoE-Powered 5-Port Gigabit Switch and PoE Extender

Unique switch powered through the network cable by an upstream PoE power source and can propagate PoE power to downstream devices.

Product Highlights

Powered by PoE

The DGS-1100-05PD is powered by a PoE switch or PoE injector that can be located up to 100m away. As such, this device is intended for applications where a small 5-port Gigabit switch is required but AC power is not close by. The upstream PoE source may support either 802.3af or 802.3at. One switch port is used for the power input (port 5) and the other four ports are available as standard 10/100/1000 ports for networked devices, such as PCs, printers, etc.

PoE Extender

The DGS-1100-05PD switch can also 'pass-through' PoE power to one or two downstream PDs (such as IP Cameras, IP Phones, Wireless APs). The PoE budget for this feature is dependent on the PoE source (802.3af or 802.3at) and the PD’s PoE Classification.

PoE pass-through capability makes the DGS-1100-05PD ideal for IP Surveillance networks when cameras are located beyond 100m from the main PoE switch. As an additional benefit, because the switch is smart-managed, an administrator can control various PoE functions through the user interface, such as remotely rebooting cameras or access points, from anywhere on the network.

Built to Last

The DGS-1100-05PD comes in a compact metal enclosure. It can be wall mounted or placed on a desktop. It has no fans so it operates silently. Compliant with IEEE 802.3az Energy Efficient Ethernet (EEE), it consumes less energy by cutting down on power consumption when port utilization is low.

Key Features

  • Gigabit Speeds – 5 x 10/100/1000 ports
  • Powered by PoE – Also supports PoE pass-through
  • Built to Last – Metal desktop housing
  • Easy to Manage – Web GUI interface
  • Essential L2 Switching Features – VLAN, QoS, IGMP Snooping and more
  • Security Functions – Static Mac, Storm Control and more

Limited Lifetime Warranty

D-Link offers a Limited Lifetime Warranty on the DGS-1100-05PD Gigabit Smart Managed Switch to further its commitment to product quality and long-term customer confidence.

    Reliable Home PoE Switch
I am using this PoE switch to run 6 IP cams, and so far it has been very reliable. It has recovered from about 3 unexpected power outages with no issues. I was previously using 2 4-port PoE devices, which seemed to have bandwidth problems causing video interruptions in recordings. This device appears to have eliminated those problems. While I am not using any of the management features of this switch., I do like that I am able to use the GUI to view the PoE status for each port and the total wattage. According to the interface, I am using a total of about 16W, which is well under the 64W budget of this switch. Overall I am very happy with the performance of this switch.

I was looking for a small managed switch, so I can force port modes/speeds when needed, do port mirroring to debug issues on other devices, etc, so I got this since it was a good deal at $63.99 back in 2012 when I purchased it.
This switch is very well constructed, with full metal housing, and doesn't even get warm during operation. The wall wart power supply is small, and doesn't get warm either, which is great.
The switch works right out of the box, however to manage it you need to have your computer in the 10.0.0.0/8 subnet at least momentarily, to talk the the switch at its factory default 10.90.90.90 address and make any changes. (Tip for linux users: something like "ifconfig eth0:2 10.90.90.2 netmask 255.0.0.0" immediately allows your computer to talk to the switch without interrupting your regular connectivity at all.)

The switch readily recognizes FE vs gigabit-ethernet devices plugged into it, and depending on the speed of the device, either the amber or the green LED on the switch port lights up respectively, giving you instant visual confirmation of what the speed is.
The web interface to manage the switch is nice, also reporting speed/duplex for each port, cable faults, and allows you to setup port-based or 802.1q VLAN's, IGMP snooping to reduce broadcast traffic, port mirroring, SNMP traps, report of learned mac addresses, loop detection, QoS, port trunking (static link aggregation only, not LACP), storm & bandwidth control, backup & restore of configuration, etc. There is no CLI interface though, only plain http (no https either).

I tried the port mirroring and it worked great; I was able to tcpdump packets on my computer being exchanged by 2 other devices on my home network (you can mirror any port to any other port on the switch, however multiple ones at the same time is not possible).

One thing the switch USED to lack, is support for jumbo frames, which might have been an issue for some, however, unless ALL your devices on the same LAN (including your router) can support jumbo frames, you cannot use them anyway.
UPDATE: Jumbo frames (9216 bytes) are now supported, just upgrade the firmware to 1.10.007 or later.

Another issue I had noticed, is some small number of RX errors reported on the switch port where my computer was plugged in (even though everything was working fine otherwise). I tried changing speed and duplex settings to no avail. Finally I noticed that 802.1q was enabled (all ports were in the same VLAN) and when I disabled it, the RX errors stopped.
UPDATE: Firmware 1.10.011 resolves this issue!

The user guide says 802.1q is by default disabled, but I found that the factory default settings is in fact enabled.

The switch is small, sturdy, has nice features for the price, works well and stays cool, so I'm pleased with it and would buy it again!

UPDATE Jan 2018: This switch has been flawlessly handling my traffic for over 5 years now! I'm using it along with an Ubiquiti EdgeRouter Lite (awesome 3 port gigabit router) and couldn't be happier with the setup!

UPDATE Sep 2021: The switch still running great after 9 years! My hardware version is A1 and I'm on latest firmware 1.10.039. My uptime currently is 564 days, ie there hasn't been any reboot in over 1.5 years (basically since I last updated the firmware) !

This is a managed, smart switch for $30. What's not to like?

I received the "B1" hardware version. I have to say, I'm impressed. I wanted a vlan-capable switch with SNMP management for my desk, and this switch is all that and more. I am -not- a D-Link fan. In fact, I typically scoff at D-Link equipment. I'm a network engineer with over 20 years of experience and like any seasoned network professional I have brand biases. The DGS-1100-05 had to be really special to rate anything more than a "meh" from me.

After unboxing I checked the firmware version - mine came with 1.00.016 which is the most recent non-beta firmware. This version would be fine for most users. There was nothing compelling in the two Beta firmwares on the D-Link website. I upgraded to the latest Beta firmware anyway. Notably, the switch let me save a copy of the old firmware before upgrading, so I can easily go back if I encounter problems. The upgrade was not terribly difficult, but you have to be sure to choose the correct .bin file - D-Link includes files for three different switches in the download. I do not know if it will reject an incorrect file. One can hope.

I use LibreNMS for network management. I added the DGS-1100-05 to LibreNMS as an SNMP v1 device. A few minutes later it was pulling full port statistics.

802.1q vlans are fully supported and the interface allows selection of tagged or untagged for each vlan on each interface. It will not permit two untagged vlans on the same interface. It will also do port-based vlans if you are so inclined. And contrary to a previous review, it will do asymmetric vlans if you're one of the .000001% who needs such a feature.

QoS, both 802.1p and DSCP, is supported. Per-port rate limiting is supported for both ingress and egress.

There are many more features in this switch that don't use and so cannot comment. As for performance, I have not tested throughput but I would be very surprised if it did not meet expectations.

One unusual aspect of the switch is that web-gui changes are not automatically saved. Saving changes is a three-step process - click the "save" drop-down, choose "save configuration", and then click "apply". Unusual and a little annoying, but not a deal breaker. The up-side is that if you make a change and lock yourself out of the switch all you need to do is power-cycle it to return to the last saved configuration.

If you need a managed switch for a SOHO environment, give one of these a shot.

Smart features are very basic but they work. Supports VLANs with no issues, but I've seen much better managed switch UIs from brands in the same price bracket like TP-Link.

You unfortunately need to install their software to set it up initially because it won't find an address automatically via DHCP, and a static IP isn't listed anywhere on the product, packaging, or documentation. Their software will scan your network to find the device and do initial configuration. But then you can uninstall the software and never use it again. Was miffed about that, I'd much rather connect to it directly via a web browser the first time I set it up, and not have to install junkware just to get it usable out of the box.

Was mostly interested in the PoE passthrough though, as it's a very hard feature to find in this price range. I wanted to power this switch from my main PoE switch AND then power a wireless access point, without using an additional AC adapter for either this switch or the access point. This did the trick perfectly, so if you have that particular need, this will do the job great. I could see this as being useful if you have a central PoE switch, and need to power a bunch of IP cameras somewhere remotely away from your main networking gear. Just be aware of the maximum power budget if you do that though, it probably can't power too many cameras at once if its being powered over PoE itself.
