August 5, 2017. Updated review. I've upped my review from 2 stars to 5/5. Teton's customer support is excellent. They responded within 24 hours and shipped me a new bladder. Unfortunately the new bladder had the same problem. However, I discovered a simple solution. Remove the rubber bite piece at the end of the tube where you suck water from. While the slit doesn't have a blockage and there's nothing inside the bite piece/cover that seems to have any type of obstruction, this piece does in fact stop water from coming up the tube. Once your remove it, water flows freely from the bladder down/up the tube and into your mouth. I've attached a photo of the problem part. Great day pack and hydration system (I've already taken it on 3 long hikes). Teton just needs to design a different mouthpiece/cover for the tube.
The backpack gets 10/10. The hydration bladder does not and gets a 1/10. The 1 is only because the bladder doesn't leak. While the bladder does not leak, you can't get hardly any water out of the bladder to the point where it is unusable. Even when the bladder is outside of the back pack the same problem exists. Also, there was a very nasty taste, not just plastic, coming from, from what I could get out of the bladder, water. The nasty taste was not a soapy taste so it's not from the mild soap I uses. I followed instructions and cleaned both the inside of the bladder and the tube with warm water and mild liquid soap prior to use. Liquid soap we've been using on a regular basis and have also used on other brands of bladders. Thoroughly rinsed everything. Let fully dry. Filled the bladder with water from our home filtered water pitcher. Tested the whole system on a 2 hour hike. After the hike and while at home I double checked the bladder water system. Water comes up the tube when you suck on the bite piece but pretty much stops there. I unscrewed the tube from the bladder. No blockages anywhere either from the bladder or the tube. A tiny, very tiny bit of water comes through the tube when you use the system but then it stops. You can get a bit more water out of the system if you blow really hard down the mouthpiece/tube back into the bladder. But then it stops again. The bladder doesn't leak. Great. But if you can't get any water out of it, it's useless. Don't understand why Teton doesn't do their own tests. It's immediately apparent what the problem is. Am looking for a replacement bladder.
