The first thing I noticed when I took this lamp out of the box is that it is larger than I expected; the photo makes it look small, but it is, actually, larger than it looks. The base is 6 inches in diameter (from the picture, I thought the base of the diameter would be about 3 inches). The height -- with the magnifying glass extended vertically -- is 18 inches; with the magnifying glass bent at the top for comfortable viewing, it is about 9 to 10 inches tall (perfect height for using it while sitting at a table). The casing around the lens is 4-1/2 inches in diameter; the lens, itself, is 3-1/2 inches in diameter. It is very sturdy and solidly built. I was very pleased with its construction. The switch (which is located on the base) is a push-button switch; it even has a little red light next to the switch to indicate when it is turned on; I am not sure why the red light is there (since you can, obviously, tell when it is turned on); however, it is an indication of going the extra mile in its design and construction -- the red light could, easily, have been eliminated.
The magnification is great! There is a focal point about 5 inches down from the lens (based on my eyesight) -- perfect for looking at something held in my hands. I was, easily, able to detect very small structural elements in what I was examining under the lens. It is just what i needed -- mainly for electronics; however, it works great for seeing and removing splinters (I, also, do some woodworking) from my or my children's fingers.
It is portable enough to where I can use it at my desk, and just set it aside when not needed. I can use the battery power (3 AA batteries located in the base) or I can plug it in using the well-constructed AC adapter (Output 5.0V - 800 mA); either way, the lighting is very good (18 bright LEDs -- each mounted in its own little reflector -- put out a lot of light).
Overall, I am very pleased my purchase. I had considered a slightly less expensive similar lamp produced by another manufacturer; however, based on the feedback, I opted to spend a little more in hopes of getting something that was not cheaply made. I am glad I purchased this one; however, I can't compare it with the other one since I did not purchase the other one. I had been looking for a well-constructed lighted magnifying lamp for quite some time -- I didn't want to waste my money on something cheap. I am pleased to report that I feel very comfortable that my money was well spent with this purchase; I highly recommend it.
