The back pocket is big enough for a laptop and feels nicely padded so I don't have to worry about things breaking. I have a metal ruler that I carry in it too, and it has yet to get bent up or warped.
It has a lot of mini pockets in the main/middle compartment, which I use for things like mini paint containers or tissue packs, but I wish some of them were a little wider to fit things like a computer mouse when I need to carry my laptop.
Sometimes my brushes fall out of the brush holders in the top detachable compartment, and the spacing is odd so it's hard to have a lot of writing or painting utensils in there at once. The straps are very taught, good for security but not good for things like standard erasers or even regular pens, which are very hard to get in and out conveniently. Again, having a few of them be a little wider would have been useful.
The bag fits a little awkwardly on my back, unless the straps are very taught then it tends to sit on my lower back, which caused a lot of aching in the beginning (I guess I got used to it, haha). It doesn't stick out so much that it's a hassle to carry around for fear of knocking everyone over, though, and it's secure enough not to worry about sticky fingers in crowded areas. It maintains its rectangular shape very well, even when stuffed with a moderate amount of not-rectangular things.
If you're an art student or traveling artist and have a hard time keeping track of all your things, I would recommend this bag. The detachable compartment is extremely useful for days when I know I don't need to carry absolutely everything around. Just be careful you don't hurt yourself, it can get heavy after a while when you're toting around your entire dorm room.
For someone who has a substantial amount of art supplies this would be great.
