    The DR400 drum unit wore out after less than 3000 pages. For comparison, the previous drum unit lasted for roughly 8000 pages, while the ones before that each lasted for 15 - 20,000 pages. Maybe I just got bad examples the last two times, but it's a relatively expensive part to replace so quickly. Plus, when you're trying to get some documents printed it gets old in a hurry when you have to keep cleaning and swapping out drum units and toner cartridges, printing multiple test pages to let things stabilize after each swap, etc.

    It might be more cost-effective and less frustrating to just get a new printer.

    UPDATE, 7th December 2012
    I'd already cleaned the drum unit's cylinder and corona wire several times before accepting that it was bad; I was still getting a persistent faintly printed vertical area close to one side of each page. After that though I decided to look at the drum unit more closely to see if I could find out what was wrong, because it's a fairly simple and accessible device. No harm done if I damaged it further at this point.

    The corona wire is a very fine wire running the width of the drum unit. I noticed that there was a metal grid just underneath the wire, and with a magnifying glass I saw that there was an accumulation of toner on one part of the grid that corresponded to the faint band on my pages. The corona wire blocked easy access to the grid, but using a Q-tip dipped in isopropyl alcohol I was able to clean the grid anyway by either pushing the wire straight down onto the grid or off to one side.

    I wouldn't recommend doing this unless you're willing to accept that you might break the wire and hence the drum unit, but in my case it got the unit working normally again. I've upgraded my rating from 2 stars to 4 stars (3-1/2 would be more accurate though).
