Editorial Reviews

Digitally remastered edition of this classic 1978 melodic Rock album. Alongside more familiar names such as Kansas, Boston and Styx, Trillion were one of the greatest - yet in many ways unheralded at the time - bands of the era. Combining stunningly melodic songs with adventurous arrangements and tricky instrumentation the band straddled a knife edge between the deliciously hook laden pomp of Toto and the daring anything-goes musicality of pomp-prog masters Kansas and Starcastle. It was a style that had no boundaries, incorporating raging guitar driven hard rock to delicate and complex progressive compositions. Helmed by British producer Gary Lyons (Foreigner, Lone Star, Gamma) and featuring future Toto vocalist Fergie Frederiksen, Trillion's debut album is an astounding and accomplished work that sounds is as impressive today as it was when first released.

To me, Trillion should have been bigger than they were. To me, they(more than bands like Styx and Kansas) had the perfect balance of prog and arena rock. Their songs were complex, yet simple. The keyboards and guitars had the perfect balance of musicianship and melody. They also had a great vocalist on this album(their second one had a different vocalist). He name was Dennis "Fergie" Frederiksen. I had been wanting to get this CD for a while, but it was the January 18th(2014) death of Fergie from cancer was what made me finally decide to get this CD. He had the voice of an angel. This band's keyboardist, Patrick Leonard, would later write songs for Madonna. He did not overpower with his keys; they were just the icing on a very tasty cake. They had the Queen production(as Gary Lyons was the engineer on Queen's A Night At The Opera). The sound and liner notes from this Rock Candy Records reissue are excellent. It was interesting to learn from said liner notes that this band started as a full-blown prog band inspired by Yes and Genesis, but the streamlined their proggy sound when a couple of the members heard the self-titled Boston debut. C'mon, people! Pick up this CD, and give this underground band some long overdue props.

I've loved this album since I first bought it in late '78 or early '79 because of the cover art! I bought it at the same time as I bought Toto for the same reason. Glad I bought both! I like the second Trillion album better though they had a better singer then...

Once you rpast the first 4 tracks, there isn't much there. The lead singer did a better job on Toto's Isolation. Try Isolation!!

Up until now, the only way to get this CD was an expensive import...not anymore! Snap this one up before it's gone, and then get CLEAR APPROACH, Trillion's second CD!

It is great. Just as I remembered it.

In 1978 keyboardist Patrick Leonard and vocalist Dennis "Fergie" Frederiksen and a small handful of other musicians formed Trillion. Recorded in the studios at the Caribou Ranch owned by former Chicago producer, James William Guercio, in remote Nederland, Colorado their debut album hearkens back to a different era. Their brand of hard rock is strongly reminiscent of much of the better work of Blue Oyster Cult.

Frederiksen's tweeter-scorching tenor graces all but one track on the 8 song release. The album starts with a bang on "Hold Out" with Fergie not only contributing vocals but also playing the tubular bells. Tubular bells?!?! Yes, oddly enough, tubular bells being used in 70s hard rock. The bells are subtle and you may not even notice them at first listen but they accent the song nicely.

"Hold Out" segues into "Big Boy" which has a very similar vibe. Both tracks have catchy grooves fun to tap on your steering wheel or coffee table to.

For all its cheese glory, "Give Me Your Money, Honey" is a regrettably catchy song... Regrettably catchy because, really, you don't want to be caught dead singing it to yourself in public... but after only a few listens, unfortunately you may find yourself doing just that.

"You Never Had It So Good" will never win any awards for having clever lyrics. But it has a rather enjoyable guitar solo by Frank Barbalace and Fergie has the kind of voice that could make even the yellow pages sound compelling.

While his keyboard/synthesizer theatrics are present on all the songs on the album, Patrick Leonard's keyboard playing is most evident on "May As Well Go."

The whole album is enjoyable and fun, it doesn't take itself seriously (unless you consider a song titled "Fancy Action" to be high-art that is), but perhaps what makes this album so enjoyable is knowing that vocalist Fergie Frederiksen would go on to sing lead for bayou rockers, LeRoux, and south California studio rockers, Toto. And Patrick Leonard would go on to produce the likes of Madonna, Peter Cetera, and Michael W. Smith... not to mention was ½ of the sadly overlooked and critically acclaimed, Toy Matinee with the late Kevin Gilbert.

While their musical seeds weren't sown until later, this album shows where Frederiksen and Leonard's musical seeds were initially planted and where they initially cut their teeth.

Top album nel genere pomp rock con Fergie Frederiksen alla voce, più avanti poi anche nei Toto, in un debutto spaziale.
Disco da avere visto che oggi si rende abbastanza reperibile rispetto agli anni d'origine.

I am truly happy with this CD purchase. It's been almost 40 years since I bought this on vinyl, but being an early teenager I slowly turned it into a cutting board. a Japanese remaster of the original, but it's really about the nostalgia for me. Shipping speed and quality upon delivery were excellent.
