Red Ledge is known for offering cutting edge outdoor apparel at an affordable price. In the Red Ledge Thunderlight family of products, the women's parka is the crown jewel that shines with an offering of features seen mostly on much more expensive jackets. Our own patented T-Core® waterproof/breathable coating is applied to lightweight rip-stop nylon taffeta in conjunction with a DWR (Durable Water Repellant) finish. All seams are taped and sealed to ensure a complete waterproofness. The Thunderlight women's parka offers two lower and one chest pocket zip pocket, pit zips for ventilation, elasticized cuffs with adjustable Velcro® closures, an interior storm flap with a micro-tricot chin guard and an adjustable draw cord at the waist and at the hem so you will always be protected from the elements. The attached hood has a visor and adjustable draw cords, but when not needed, you can simply roll down and hide the hood away. The Thunderlight Parka comes in it's own mesh stuff sack for easy storage and portability. The center back measurement is 28" for size medium. For a recent fishing trip to Alaska, I chose this jacket from many possibilities because it is advertised as both lightweight and waterproof. This, in fact, is FALSE ADVERTISING. Red Ledge says:

"Our own patented T-Core® waterproof/breathable coating is applied to lightweight rip-stop nylon taffeta in conjunction with a DWR (Durable Water Repellant) finish. All seams are taped and sealed to ensure a complete waterproofness."

Now, my understanding of waterproof is waterproof; water resistant is something different. This jacket IS NOT waterproof -- it is water resistant.

During my 5-day trip, I wore the jacket in misty weather and even a light drizzle, and I did not have a problem with its permeability. Then, on my last day fishing, we were caught in rain to for 3 hours. Soon after the rain started, the jacket's fabric began absorbing water and turning a darker color. Within an hour, I was soaked. By the time I returned indoors, the jacket had absorbed so much water that the front, bottom pockets had pools of water in them -- even though they were zipped shut. It seems like a designer had the forethought to make the insides of all three pockets mesh. The breast pocket drained just fine, but due to the fact that the lower pockets are nestled into the very base of the jacket against the "100% taped seams," absorbed water does not drain from those lower pockets.

It's bad enough that this product failed and I was left freezing and uncomfortable on vacation and came home with a cold. To make matters worse, I was carrying a $200. digital camera in one of the front bottom pockets. I knew to remove the battery and memory card and let the camera completely dry out for a couple of days before trying to turn it on, but no luck: my camera was ruined.

I contacted the company, and their only offer was to replace the jacket (thank you but, why would I want another defective/poorly designed jacket?). If their products are waterproof as stated, then they should stand behind them and cover the damage. If this particular jacket was defective, again, they should stand behind their name and cover the damage. I will never purchase another Red Ledge / Tah Sin product, and I hope this review keeps others from making the same mistake.

I wish I could choose zero stars because this company's products don't deserve even one star.

Great Rain Jacket for Biking; But Not Long Lasting

I'm a daily bike commuter in Portland, OR, so I see my fair share of rain. I got this jacket in the yellow color, figuring it would be highly visible, as well as waterproof. I've been wearing it several weeks now in drizzle to showers and it has performed well. Last night, it got it's first serious test of a heavy downpour, and my shirt and hair stayed high and dry. Some of the features I like best about this jacket: The area up around the collar where the jacket rests against your face if zipped up all the way is soft and plushy; the toggles to tighten the hood are also made of a soft material, keeping everything nice and comfortable around your face. For biking, I like that it's a longer length (keeps my buns protected), the hood fits neatly under my helmet while still affording plenty of peripheral vision, and I like that while it's a nice bright yellowy-green, it doesn't scream "bike gear," so I don't feel like a dork wearing it as just a regular raincoat in non-bicycling situations. In terms of sizing, I would say, go a size lower than you normally would. I got an XL, since that's what I normally take and find this jacket a bit roomy. I decided to keep it rather than exchange it, because it does give me room to wear a couple of layers, including a sweater or polar fleece jacket underneath, but it definitely skews toward the large, so if you're looking for a trim fit, go a size smaller. Also, although this jacket comes with a bag for stuffing it in for compact storage/carrying, it doesn't actually fit in the storage bag very well. While not excessively bulky, this definitely isn't a jacket you are going to cram down into a couple of cubic inches.

Update as of 06/21/2013: I have downgraded my review to 3 stars, due to the fact that just a year and a quarter after purchase, the inner waterproof lining is starting to peel away and the jacket now qualifies as merely water-resistant rather than waterproof. In a heavy downpour, I now find my clothes underneath the jacket getting a bit damp. I have gotten a lot of use out of the jacket in the past year and a quarter, but for the price, I would expect the jacket to last at least a couple years.

This jacket did not remain even water RESISTANT for long. I live in the Pacific Northwest now and really need rainwear for every day. This jacket is now useless -- it ceased being water resistant about 6 months after I bought it. Would not re-purchase. So much for my hope that it would probably give me a few good years of use. I have upgraded to a Showers Pass jacket.

I purchased this jacket to replace a yellow pullover that had ceased to be waterproof after five years. I prefer keeping a lightweight rain jacket in my bag to carrying an umbrella. I am very pleased. It is exactly as depicted. I got the "New Moon" color and is is a very slightly lime tinged yellow. Visibility is a good thing on a bike and this color is visible. Three zippered pockets will hold everything I need. The hood folds into the collar. A well-made jacket that will probably give me a few years of good service. Longer in back for cycling. Nice bag to keep it in. Exactly what I was looking for.
