Love everything about this jacket. This is my first time buying anything Carhartt and I am very pleased. The color is nice, the material is super durable, and it fits great.

I am usually a size large in jackets or hoodies, because I dont like them fitting too tight. Other reviews said to size down with this one though, and they were right. I ordered a medium and it fits perfect. I'm able to wear a sweatshirt underneath comfortably and still have flexibility with the jacket all the way zipped up. For size reference I am 5' 9" and 175 lbs.

I love that the hood actually covers my whole head too without it being too tight or falling back. Sleeves only come up an inch or so with arms fully extended, but it isn't obnoxious. The elastic waistband and sleeve cuffs are very comfortable and make for a better fit as well. So far the coldest the weather has gotten since I've owned it is in the low 50s, and the jacket keeps me extra warm. I'm sure it will still be great in even colder weather. Overall, highly satisfied with this purchase!

After wearing a lightweight but very warm down coat that shed feathers everywhere, and wound up with torn shoulder seams the very first season I wore it, I was on the lookout for something sturdy. This coat is just about perfect. It's heavyweight, practically windproof, and cozy warm. I live in North Dakota, and this winter has been brutally cold so far--all gusty winds and air temperatures in the negative 10s and 20s. I usually wear two layers underneath the coat (heavyweight sweatshirt and undershirt), and sometimes a third with base layers because I'm one of those people that's cold all the time. I also wear a fleece hood with face guard, and a scarf wrapped around my neck to stop the wind from blowing down the top of the coat. This coat has withstood this winter wonderfully so far, and I'm sure it will perform just as well when the temperatures "warm up" a little and I don't have to layer up quite so much.

I agree with other reviewers that the zipper is stiff and seems cheap compared to the construction of the rest of the coat. It is also not form fitting, as others have described--very square shaped with no defined waist. But I was so fed up with my last coat that neither of these things are a deal breaker for me. The only thing I miss about my old coat is that it was long and completely covered my hips down to just above my knees. This jacket hits right at my hips.

For reference, I'm 5' 5" tall, 34B bust, and 130 lbs. I've tried on both a small and an extra small, and though both fit well I preferred the XS. Even with all the layers I wear in the winter months, the small had too much extra room around the torso and would ride up high enough that it allowed wind to blow up underneath the coat. I no longer have to routinely yank the jacket down with the XS.

I own several Carhartt hoodies (size S and XS), knit hats, and vests, and I think this is my favorite item of the lot. All in all, I'm very happy with my purchase, and I expect this coat will last a lot longer than my last one did.

This jacket is made of the typical Carhartt thick durable canvas material. I wore it all through the winter and stayed warm. The nice thing about this jacket is it never got too hot. I find myself regretting wearing my Northface down jacket when I get into a store or mall, but I could keep my Carhartt on comfortably. The color is true to the image shown above. I generally wear anywhere from an XS to a Medium in jackets/tops. Usually, cheaper brands make clothes smaller, so Carhartt, being a good brand, makes clothes true to size and a XS fits a small adult and isn't some product from China that would only end up fitting a small child. I am 5'6" and waver between 115 and 125 lbs. The XS fits me great in the shoulders (usually a problem with XS jackets), zips comfortable, and does not at all look or feel snug. The arm lengths are perfect and I have long arms, usually everything is short, especially that Northface jacket I mentioned (not to rag on them, but they around the same price point, so it makes a good comparison). The pockets are comfortably deep. The area near the top where the hood starts is a little stiff, but still comfortable. The hood is a good full size and actually goes over my entire head. For people who know what to expect from this thick canvas, I'd highly recommend this jacket. For those who aren't familiar with Carhartt, I'd go check it out somewhere, so you know what you're getting.

The Carhartt jacket in merlot is lovely. It was stiff as a board when first arrived but after I knew I would keep it I washed it with some fab softener and it is better. I know it will break in over time. It is a bit of an odd fit, long in the torso and the sleeves could be an inch longer, but a good fit overall and it is not huge around the body which I was afraid of. It will wear well with just a shirt under or I can bulk it up with layers if really cold. The best part of these jackets, besides their rugged wear, is the color: I first ordered dusty plum, and though a lovely color it was a bit dark for me. I am crazy about the merlot. If I buy a 2nd jacket later, I plan to get it in mist, or perhaps coal. The colors are very true to the photos on Amazon. The Amazon service was amazing, as always. The replacement jacket was here one day after I dropped the return item at a UPS facility! - Price is a bit high for the lack of movement and comfort the jacket has, but this may change as it gets worked in.
- Zipper, while seemingly good quality, is stiff and a bit hard to get started at the bottom. Almost like it could use some lubricant of some sort.
- Material used inside feels a bit cheap?

All in all, price was higher than I would have wanted to pay for something that feels so stiff and bulky in weird areas, but as a work jacket I know it will hold up just fine and last me for a good long while.

UPDATE from 3 star too 5 star
After only a week of wearing this it broke in and formed to my shape quite well. It is still bulky in the shoulders but it is no longer a stiff boxy feel. The material is surprisingly good at sheltering from the wind and rain. The hood has been amazing in all the wind in my area. The zipper has become less difficult to zip up, and though the jacket itself feels thinner it truly does keep you warm. Haven't hit many negatives yet but I'm confident it will hold up. BUY IT!

I am 5'2, normally take a medium or size 10, I ordered the medium and it's a perfect fit. It doesn't sit like a bomber jacket on me, its a little longer and does cover my bottom. The material is stiff to start with, including the zipper which requires extra work over the seams but is getting better, but don't give up. It molds to you with wear. I ordered the brown and I'm very happy with the color. I have worn this out in heavy snow while visiting Whitehorse, I really like the hood. The coat kept me warm and dry. I also like that it's not form fitting like my down jacket, so if you're indoors and undo the zip, there is air circulation.
