Product Description

The Dedicated Power Zoom Shoe-Mount is an autofocus TTL power zoom lens for digital Pentax/Samsung SLR cameras. Its auto-zoom flash head senses the focal length of the camera's lens and adjusts accordingly. There is a built-in slave mode and it can tilt (0°-90°) and swivel (0°-270°) for complete lighting control and shadow-free flash photography. Additional features include red-eye reduction, automatic shutter speed setting, front and rear curtain synchronization, and a 24mm-85mm zoom range.

I have never owned a Pentax OEM flash so I cannot compare them side by side. But comparing to pop-up flash, it is a great improvement for not much $$. See my example pictures under product images. The build quality is good and I have not had any issues with it. I do not use it often. Bought it in July, 2012 to be used with my Pentax K-x. Plan on using it for indoor family shots during holidays. It also has focus assit lamp that improves focusing in poor light or in complete darkness. I would recommend this to any Pentax owners that cannot spend 3X more cash on OEM. I love the tilt and swivel, you can pretty much aim it at any angle to bounce the light.

This is my second unit of this type and it works well enough. Decent power and range, controls and settings aren't the best so I just stick it on manual and set the power from there. Fold out diffuser and reflector not really worth using.

Down side - the zoom mechanism sometimes jams for no reason and you have to smack it around to unjam it. As I mentioned, this is the second unit I've had and both have the same problem. The first broke at the shoe-mount when the camera it was attached to rolled off my car seat.

Probably only worth about $80.

I chose this flash because I can use the TTL feature with my Pentax K-30.... it's Oookaayy. I find myself using manual mode most of the time. Sometimes I smell "smoke" after the flash fires -- kind of like what you smell after shooting fireworks. All-in-all, it's a decent flash as it does the job it's designed to do.

Worked fine with the Pentax Kx, although was buggy at times and would not always fire. When it worked the bounce flash could lead to some amazing indoor photos. Unfortunately, I have moved on to the Pentax K-01 and Pentax k3 and this flash does not work with either of them. Very disappointing and probably the biggest reason I would never buy a 3rd party flash again as there is no support on making compatible going forward. Pay the extra and get an official Pentax flash, it will last you for years.

I'm using this flash with a Pentax K100D. It worked in TTL mode! The flash head does not zoom automatically as the lens is zoomed, however, but I suspect that this is due to the camera/Pentax-brand lens not providing a signal to the flash. The head rotates and swivels, allowing bounce flash in landscape or portrait mode. Exposure is accurate when the head is tilted to bounce. The built-in reflector (no more 3x5 card) is convenient. I'll use the diffuser when there is no surface close for bouncing. Build quality is excellent.

The flash is not as bulky as my old Vivitar 283 Auto Thyristor, which I used on this camera previously.

I set the camera to Program and auto ISO. I set the flash to cover a 35mm focal length lens...and just leave it that setting. The focus-assist light comes on when the subject is too dark for the camera to focus accurately.

So, I have a TTL flash for less than $100 Amazon Prime. The comparable Pentax brand would be $300, probably.
