I bought 2 of these speakers to replace a 30+ year old pair. They work fine as part of my surround system but packaging was inadequate considering how shippers handle things. Not only were the boxes torn up, the bases of both speakers were broken up enough to be unrepairable and useless. Fortunately, they aren't required, so it isn't worth the hassle of requesting a refund or replacement. One of the speakers had a minor scratch, nothing that affects what the speaker is designed for-- sound. If you don't mind factory seconds and unuseable bases, these are worth the money I guess. They work as designed except for the bases.

These are an unbelievable value and sound fantastic. They arrived without any damages and are amazingly well built. Klipsch was stupid for not continuing the Energy line of speakers. The RC series was likely the pinnacle of Energy's design and build efforts and offered the biggest bang for the buck. Even by today's standards these speakers outperform anything Klipsch has to offer currently.

The RC Series produced excellent speakers especially for the price. These speakers have a great quality construction with solid materials. The sound is quite warm and quite to my liking. Although they are an older discontinued model, I could not say that speakers evolve to the extent that these are "outdated". They are fantastic and provide great range and punch to keep my home theater and home stereo working in fine shape for years to come.

    Report
Reviewed in the United States on August 26, 2015
I have been an audiophile for about 4 decades. Over the years, I have used the finer speakers made by AR, JBL, Ohm...eventually settled on Carver ALS-3+ more than 15 years ago and have been very happy with it, no thought of ever replacing them. Since the early days of surround sound, I have also had a home theater system as well. The speakers in that system included Advent, Boston Acoustic, Jamo, Mirage, Polk Audio and Yamaha. I never paid attention to Energy speakers because it's not a highly recognized name in the US and I have never had a chance to see or hear them in the showrooms of hi-fi stores before they pretty much became extinct. About 5 years ago, I came across the RC50 on clearance sale for a modest sum, thought I would take a chance to order a pair. It was immediately obvious that it was better than any of the front speakers I ever had in my HT system. That prompted me to get 5 more RC speakers to revamp all my HT speakers except for the subwoofer: 2 RC-R for the rear, LCR for front center, and RC10 for front surround. They were all on some kind of clearance discount, probably because the company was sold to Klipsch and had some new models coming out. I later came across the Veritas V5.2c center that was supposed to be the reincarnation of the LCR. I bought one to see how it compared. The Veritas' wood finish was superb, but the old LCR is the clear winner in sound quality. After playing the Veritas long enough to be sure that it's not an issue with break-in, I returned it for a refund, something that I rarely do. I was aware that RC70 was the flagship model in the product line, but it was unavailable at the time. Some months later, an authorized dealer's web site showed that there would be a forthcoming stock. I pre-ordered a pair with no hesitation, got them a few months later to replace the RC50. That completed the upgrade.

What distinguishes the RC speakers is the lack of coloration and distortion, i.e., the tonal balance is very neutral, voices and instruments sound smooth, natural and clear. The sound quality is consistent across the product line, matched much better than other company's. The tiny RC10 sounds very much like the big RC70, except a little shy in the bass, but there is enough that many marveled at how big its bass sounded. Putting on the grilles softens the treble a bit. They're magnetically attached, could be easily removed or reattached as one feels like, no worry about breaking some mechanical clips. The appearance also changes with the grille off. The silver/black drivers set in real wood veneer gives an aggressive "robocop" kind of look. This is very practical if a driver ever needs to be replaced. All that's need is to take out a few screws and the driver can be pulled off from the front. I actually had to do that once. Energy sent me a 6.5" driver and it took just a few minutes to make the swap. Were it not covered by the 5-yr warranty, the cost would have been about $60, minimal sum in hi-fi repair. So as long as the company lives, one doesn't need to worry about the RC speaker ever dying. I don't think I'll ever have to think about "upgrading" this 7 speaker HT system.

The tonal quality of the RC70 is actually not that different from the Carver. Both are smooth and neutral. I've found myself using the RC system more and more for listening to music as there are growing numbers of concert DVDs and multichannel music recordings available (SACD, BluRay Audio, DVD Audio, etc.) For most music, the RC70 has a bass that's good enough. The spec goes down to 31 Hz, but that's at -10db level. It could benefit from a subwoofer. I use a Mirage BPS-150i, which is my first and last sub. It works with the RC70 nicely both for music and movies. It doesn't cause an earthquake in the house, but more than my spouse can stand.

Many owners of RC speakers commented that they're incredible value. They seem to have a small random supply that would suddenly appear and then quickly sold out. In recent years, they're offered at a fraction of their original MSRP, and so nothing else could approach that quality/price ratio. Klipsch bought the company but didn't really market the orphaned products to meet the demand. RC70, RC-10 and RC-LCR are still shown on the company web site as current products. I think they actually taken off for a few years and brought back from the grave. This is very rare except for special products that have a real following. I suspect if Klipsch markets the RCs properly, make them widely available, they may take a lot of sales away from other more profitable speakers.

I doubt I will ever buy another set of tower speakers again, these are that good. If I do, I will scour the Earth for another pair of these. Audiophile level. Worth every penny of the $1,000 MSRP, each. Under $500 apiece and you're getting a massive value. I took advantage of a big sale price and I am thrilled.

They are ELITE as a two-piece set-up with high quality music and amps. They spoil you with a wide, gorgeous sound stage. Everything sounds perfectly reproduced. Ports plugged or not, bi-amped, w/ a sub or without...whatever... they just sound AMAZING.

You simply cannot go wrong. I have heard a lot of the speakers in this size and range and the RC-70s take a back seat to none. I like Energy bookshelf speakers a lot, and have owned a couple pairs. First CB-20 (great), then RC-10 (insanely great), so having been introduced to the Reference Connoisseur series by the bookshelf, had great confidence in this buy. There are pro audio reviews online comparing these to $5,000 pairs of speakers, favorably.

I have envied Def Tech big dogs, and many others. I have now found my muse. These are amazing. At a discount they are INSANE. The tweeters (subtle, highly accurate, clear but not horn-y or overly bright) and mids are dramatically good, the bass is solid, clean, and full. I do have a subwoofer but the bass of the RC-70s is clean, deep and plenty beefy on the speakers alone. They do seem to have a break-in period, which I originally doubted even exists, but which many people observe and which Energy mentions in their literature.

They just get better and better. Best decision I have ever made regarding speakers.

*Edited: with additional time, I am even more in love with these! They never fatigue your ears, they just open up and sound amazing. All music is good. Well-recorded, good sources will shine. All genres too. So glad to join the Cult Of Energy! Consider me a fanboy. Buy with utmost confidence.
Google the SoundStage review, and the Sound & Vision review, of these speakers...so, so, good.
