Editorial Reviews

Pete Jolly and Ralph Pena toured New Zealand in September of 1960. They were the first jazz artists to perform at many of the venues there, and were a great success. Their last performance at the Colony Club in Auckland on Sept. 18, 1960 was recorded and released on a non-commercial LP. This CD presents the full recorded concert, the LP tracks, plus two selections that never made it on to the record. This was a very fine performance before a very appreciative audience.

Top review from the United States

I saw Pete Jolly and Ralph Pena in New Zealand during their 1960 tour and purchased their now out-of-print vinyl "Impossible" at the time. Wore it out! Couldn't believe that after all these years the Auckland concert had been committed to CD. This is true piano and bass virtuousity and has converted many a chamber-music buff to jazz. Jolly has a lyrical and very melodic improvisation style while at the same time is technically brilliant - he's one of the few jazz musicians who can execute a perfectly sustained keyboard run. Pena is one of the great bassists, and but for his tragic death following an accident we surely would have heard more from this man. As a duo they are perfectly attuned to each other's creativity and the result while unusual in being only a duo, is entirely satisfying. Their version of "on Green Dolphin Street" is second to none.
