The Baby Boomer generation has sustained membership associations for quite some time. As that era nears an end, it's time to start thinking about X, Y, and Z -- the next generation of association executives, board members, and volunteers. The New Recruit brings to light the challenges that Boomer-centric membership associations are experiencing and viable solutions that association executives can implement to successfully recruit and retain younger generations. The only succession plan a membership association has is the continuation of its membership. The New Recruit will teach you how to survive the post-Boomer era and create an association for the next generation.

I highly recommend this book to anyone who is concerned about membership problems and is interested in finding ways to solve those problems. In my opinion Ms. Sladek does a very good job of explaining the membership problems many associations have had, and continue to experience.
I have the book, read it a couple of times, and continue to read in it for information I can use to help me in my quest to solve membership problems in the non-profit groups in which I have volunteered for a long time. This is a very good book to read if you're serious about turning around a membership problem!
Her other book, "The End of Membership As We Know It" is also a good book, and I refer to it every once in a while. However my favorite of the two is "The New Recruit," because it is focused on the new member, and the differences between the generations. It is a help in defining how to retain and attract the members you want. I recommend this book to my associates whenever the opportunity arises.

I find this author to over generalize everything. It's incredibly annoying.

Reading it for an organization, I found a lot of generalizations, and as a boomer, found her characterizations and comments about boomers offensive!
