Joyce Washor spent her first ten years in Brooklyn, NY and then became a Jersey girl until graduating from Douglass College, Rutgers University. In 1997, after spending 25 years as a textile designer in NYC she made plans to devote herself to painting full time. But fate had other plans- a painting related shoulder injury required her to reevaluate her painting techniques. It seemed she had two choices: learn to paint with her left arm/hand or scale her paintings down in size in order to use her wrist instead of her shoulder. Since painting small enabled her to learn more quickly, purchase art supplies less expensively and have more opportunities to exhibit she resolved to share her experiences in book, PDF and DVD formats.

Joyce lives with her artist/chef husband L. Paul Saltzman in Woodstock NY enjoying three grandchildren and teaching watercolor in her home studio. www.JoyceWashor.com

Editorial/printing error on tutorial

Editorial/printing error on tutorial
Great book, BUT the narrative & instructions for painting suflowers in steps 4 & 5 page 127 & 128 have been omitted & replaced with the steps 4 & 5, page 132, how to paint a honey jar....Obviously an editorial/ printing error, which is frustrating as I am unable to follow the steps for the tutorial. Surprised nobody has picked up on this, not happy this book was not cheap. See pictures.

This is the first book you should buy for oil painting. The author's central thesis is that by painting miniature paintings, say 3 x 4 inches, with small brushes 2, 4 and 6 one more quickly learn what works and does not. I've tried it and I am a huge fan. It saves money, less paint, boards or canvas, and smaller and therefor less expensive brushes, and is more ecological than painting big. I can pain a miniature in a fraction of the time I invest in a larger painting and usually learn more that when painting larger. Most paintings end up in the land fill and the pigments and solvents are not benign. Curiously, the author does not combine painting small with a limited pallet, which for the same reasons, also accelerates learning. I do both. The author has an extensive pallet that includes paints that are a blend of several pigments, ignoring the dictum of using single pigment paints. In addition, the author explains how to lighten hues without using white when in fact she is, in two instances, using tube paints that each contain two white pigment. Old Holland light yellow, and violet grey contain white pigments. The result is perhaps less chalky than the artists mixing directly with titanium white because these paints also contain some zinc white but other than that, you are using white. Overall, this is a brilliant concept and a well executed book. If you combine this with a limited pallet, you will likely learn more faster.

Among all the books I purchased in the last few years, this is the one that influenced me the most. The book has 2 parts. The first one explains every detail of the painting process from mixing the colors to putting highlights on an object. It is full of concise and clear instructions and every idea is illustrated with a painting and notes e.g: "the sky color is dragged into the mountain making the value lighter and helping it recede into the background". It is as close to a live class as you can get. In the second part, the author demonstrates her 4 step process with almost 20 of her paintings. Before this book my paintings were too horrible to even gift them to my family! I started with the simple lemon painting in the book and 4 years later, I had the confidence to make a painting exhibit! Thank you Joyce!

Was looking for this book as it had been recommended by several artists. I have totally enjoyed the book. Arrived in a timely manner and very pleased.

This is one great book on painting on small canvases. For someone with limited art work space, this is a good place to start. The introduction is good, especially on what size of brushes to buy. Some basic color theory, composition, techniques for tiny oils and plenty of examples and step by step instruction. Also, working on smaller canvases requires less paint. A good book to get started with. I use water soluble oils since I can't use regular oil paints.

As a painter, I found this book to be fun, inspiring and useful as an addition to the painters' repertoire. I will certainly pass it on to my painter friends.

Painting with such small brushes is quite a challenge when used to painting large art but the book gives very good advice, lots of pictures, information you need rather than struggle on yor own figuring it out. Have not read it completely but if it continues in ths way it will be a very worthy book for the artist. Big paintings on small canvas or board can be very time consuming. Small doesn't mean fast. Have fun with it, S

The dumbest thing I ever did was give this book away. (I just ordered a used copy.) It isn't so much the matter of painting small, which I don't actually do, it's that her explanation of her palettes is the best help I've found for using a limited, complementary palette. She doesn't just say "Orange and blue," she says what colors go on the "orange side" and what go on the "blue side." It's more comprehensive and helpful than any discussion I've found. The other good book is "The Still Life Painting Atelier" which also has excellent palette advice.

I liked the format and picked up some good ideas for painting miniature paintings. The author uses oil paints but her information could be applied for any medium.

While my style is different from the talented author's, this is a book jammed with master class lessons on composition, scaling down your perspective, setting up your work space, choosing a colour palette and on and on. Well written and easy to follow. Exactly what I was looking for! My choice of canvas is 5"x7" but she also works even smaller than that.
