Alan Weiss: Biographical Sketch

Alan Weiss is one of those rare people who can say he is a consultant, speaker, and author and mean it.

His consulting firm, Summit Consulting Group, Inc., has attracted clients such as Merck, Hewlett-Packard, GE, Mercedes-Benz, State Street Corporation, Times Mirror Group, The Federal Reserve, The New York Times Corporation, Toyota, and over 500 other leading organizations.

He has served on the boards of directors of the Trinity Repertory Company, a Tony-Award-winning New England regional theater, chaired the Newport International Film Festival, and been president of the board of directors of Festival Ballet Providence.

His speaking typically includes 20 keynotes a year at major conferences, and he has been a visiting faculty member at Case Western Reserve University, Boston College, Tufts, St. John’s, the University of Illinois, the Institute of Management Studies, and the University of Georgia Graduate School of Business. He has held an appointment as adjunct professor in the Graduate School of Business at the University of Rhode Island where he taught courses on advanced management and consulting skills to MBA and PhD candidates. He once held the record for selling out the highest priced workshop (on entrepreneurialism) in the then-21-year history of New York City’s Learning Annex. His Ph.D. is in psychology. He has served on the Board of Governors of Harvard University’s Center for Mental Health and the Media.

He is an inductee into the Professional Speaking Hall of Fame® and the concurrent recipient of the National Speakers Association Council of Peers Award of Excellence, representing the top 1% of professional speakers in the world. He is a Fellow of the Institute of Management Consultants, one of only two people in history holding both those designations.

His prolific publishing includes over 500 articles and 60 books, including his best-seller, Million Dollar Consulting (from McGraw-Hill) now in its 30th year and sixth edition. His newest is Legacy: Life is not about a search for meaning but the creation of meaning (Routledge, 2021). His books have been on the curricula at Villanova, Temple University, and the Wharton School of Business, and have been translated into 15 languages.

His career has taken him to 60 countries and 49 states. (He is afraid to go to North Dakota.) Success Magazine cited him in an editorial devoted to his work as “a worldwide expert in executive education.” The New York Post called him “one of the most highly regarded independent consultants in America.” He is the winner of the prestigious Axiem Award for Excellence in Audio Presentation.

He is the recipient of the Lifetime Achievement Award of the American Press Institute, the first-ever for a non-journalist, and one of only seven awarded in the 65-year history of the association. He holds an annual Thought Leadership Conference which draws world famous experts as speakers.

He has coached former candidates for Miss Rhode Island/Miss America in interviewing skills. He once appeared on the popular American TV game show Jeopardy, where he lost badly in the first round to a dancing waiter from Iowa. Alan is married to the lovely Maria for 54 years, and they have two children and three granddaughters. They reside in East Greenwich, RI with their dogs, Coco and Bentley, a white German Shepherd.

This is Alan Weiss's companion book to "Million Dollar Consulting", which is the best book on consulting I have ever read. This newer book, published in 2006, about four years after "Million Dollar Consulting", provides the reader with helpful checklists, templates, and samples that are customized for the consulting industry.

Before I started reading this book, it seemed to me that the author would be stating the obvious by providing me with information that I, as a consulting veteran, had already had learned or developed myself. But I found myself reading every chapter and making mental notes on how I could improve my business.

I disagree with Weiss's assertion on page 134 that it is a waste of time for consultants to self-publish their own books. I am the author and self-publisher of three books, and I have gained prestige, recognition, and money as a result. Despite this, I still admire Weiss's work, and continue to refer to his writings for guidance.

Here is my suggestion for aspiring consultants: 1) read "Million Dollar Consulting" by Alan Weiss, 2) read "How to Acquire Clients" (also by Alan Weiss), and 3) read this book. The combination is a recipe for success for anyone in the consulting business.

Piggy-back from the journey, the experience, and the years of knowledge of sage advice and expertise that he delivers. I have a collection of Mr. Weiss books, all heavily color-coded with bookmarks for quick referencing. These templates should give you some sort of base footing to help jump start you business. Take into account that you are going to have customized the templates to fit your business needs, today's settings, and culture. Mr. Weiss's books are interaction guides for your success. A must-read for anyone who is looking to become a consultant, professional business developer, or entrepreneur.

I rarely give 1 or 5 stars. I definitely give this a high 4 for the great volume of quality advice and templates. Exactly what I was looking for in my starting consulting practice.

I am a huge believer in "not reinventing the wheel" whenever I can avoid it. Alan's toolkit is a great starting point for a host of consulting documents, artifacts, and "things to consider" items. Not only does his work withstand inspection on its own, the fact that it is field tested adds to its credibility.

Taken in tandem (so far) with the materials he has published on his website, this has been a huge time-saver for me! I look forward to taking in his other titles.

I have several of Alan Weiss' books on Consulting. He is an excellent writer, though he tends to repeat some of the information across several books. I would.highly recommend his books to anyone who wants to become an Entrepreneur in the business world.

This book is so full of value! As a home based small business consultant, I learned quite a bit from Mr. Weiss' other book, but would recommend this even more! The lessons of the original book are still there, but the checklists and templates are what really impressed me. From setting up your office to how to write, present and close a proposal, this book will help consultants at any level.

This is a good book for anyone considering starting a home-based consultancy. I have been cosluting for many years, the last ten or so from a home office. This is not an easy transition and I found the toolkit helpful in many ways.It would have been extremely useful had I had it when I started out many years ago. Useful when I made the change to a home office and I found it still full of useful things after 35 years in the business. For the consultant that operates alone this book should be on the reference shelf.(after it has been read of course!)

Million Dollar Consulting Toolkit: Step-by-Step Guidance, Checklists, Templates, and Samples from The Million Dollar Consultant  is extremely practical: it contains ready-to-use templates and checklists for many day-to-day activities of a consultant, supplemented with best practices and commentary description. A great tool for beginners to get started quickly and a good reference for experienced practitioners. I found this book extremely useful.

Not what I expected. Its more about setting up a consulting practice than it is about the tools you would use to consult.
