This series is exceptional! I have yet to find a program which is so structured and layered. It targets every method available to children. It is incredibly visual, auditory, verbal and kinesthetic.
Each booklet follows the same pattern so once the kids have worked through a couple of booklets, they know what to expect and don't need as much instruction.
If you have the audio tracks it's a huge bonus. My school had the audiotapes and actually converted them to mp3 tracks. Now I just load them onto my mp3 player and connect it to portable speakers. The kids really look forward to that.

This program is meant for daily use in kindergarten. I run an after school program for kids (twice a week) which necessitates introducing some pages and letting the rest of the kids do the work at home with their parents. It works. I've been running this program for 20 years and I've yet to have a child who didn't learn to blend and read a few sight-words by the time we were done.
Highly recommended!

I was fortunate to find a set that was still available.

This is a great series. I'm homeschooling my son and we began using them when he was about 5 1/2 and he really took to them. I will order them again when my daughter is ready to learn to read.

I am very familiar with this product having used it for several years when teaching kindergartners. Now I want my grandchildren to benefit from its great phonics approach to reading.

It's sad this series is out of print since it is such a good overall first year language arts program. I can't tell you how many teachers have recognized it and wished it was still available. I used it myself as a child in kindergarten, and we kept the completed set of books in their slip cover for years. I was lucky to get hold of a new set for my children to use. Both of my children have enjoyed them and experienced the feeling of success that I had remembered completing each one. Both children were reading confidently before 5 years old with a combination of this program and the Bob Books.

Each letterbook has the child:

-trace the letter with their figure
-find words in a picture that start with that sound
-practice saying the letter sound
-write the capital and lowercase letters using broken line paper
-identify pictures that start with the new letter sound
-write letters to identify starting, middle or ending sounds (mixed with all letters previously covered)
-cut and paste activities
-oral listening
-drawing
-story and basic reading comprehension (choice of three pictures)

Some books have activities which focus on ordering size, shapes, recognizing patterns, etc. About a third the way through, children begin to put letters together to read words. By the end of the series they are reading short stories.

Each book builds on the previous ones so they must be completed in order. No religious content. Well illustrated. Fun. Varied. Age appropriate. Wonderful stories. Parent directions to each activity are included on the back cover.

Reservations: You do have to be a little creative with it. Without the audio tape to go with it, a parent/teacher will need to come up with lists of words for each section that the child needs to identify whether they hear that sound. For instance, in "Dd" you need to come up with six words that do or not not start with a "d" sound - not exactly a difficult task, but requires a few minutes preparation, and challenging the student by including a blend like "drum". You may also need to make noises like a train, cat, or horse galloping to complete some sections. Other sections are more difficult to reproduce, like a selection of music that would best represent an animal's movement. You will need to come up with your own reading comprehension questions.

It was challenging the first time around to find some of the stories for the final reading comprehension section. For "Ii" we used Star Maiden. For "S" we needed the "The Pot that Would not Stop", and we adapted using an old Disney book called the "Magic Grinder." The Elephant Book I discovered was a famous Kippling tale. Luckily, most are standard fairy tales we already had, and the internet filled many of the gaps.

Combine it with the Bob Books, and lots of hands on math and some nature studies, and you have a complete homeschool curriculum for an average Kindergarten or advanced Pre-K student.
