Seems quite small for a 42R of this vintage.
Should be between 21 inches and 22 inches - maybe, 23.
The measurement of is taken of the jacket front laying flat (no hanger), unstretched, underarm to underarm seam where the sleeve meets the body.
This gives a "chest" measurement, which, if the jacket has not been tailored/altered since purchase should be about 2 inches bigger than the labeled size.
