These percolators are great machines but users need to know why weak coffee sometimes happens. The heating element in the base uses thermal switches to turn on and off the heater. If moisture from the previous use/cleaning gets inside, there is a thermal conducting paste between the sensor switch and heating element. Moisture causes steam that blows the paste out causing the heater to cease. Sometimes this is the source of the "pop" some have reported. My solution was to use a thicker amount of thermal conductive paste and to keep moisture from the base. A second complaint was a black deposit in the bottom of the pot insides. Soak the pot occasionally with two table spoons of dish soap mixed with a full pot of water over night  to bring the pot back to new condition. Rinse thoroughly of course afterwards and use a cloth to remove the black coffee deposit.

My second Presto, as the 10 cup Presto coffee pot finally died. I needed something smaller. I was surprised that even the 1st pot I made was great, with no breaking in period. It perks for a good 5 minutes or so for a perfect cup of coffee. I do miss the glass thing on top so you can see the coffee
