I have Def Tech, Acoustic Research, Klipsch, Sonance, Elac, Yamaha (all the top end models of each brand), and these speakers "SMOKE" them all!  Was hesitant as I bought some low end POLK for my son to play around with, took a chance on these versus SONUS FABER, and couldn't be happier.  Truly a beautiful peace of sonic engineering.

Best speakers I have ever owned

I had a set of these for 3 days to demo and was blown away by the sound.  My full review is available in the Polk Forums (the link's at the top of the page).  Just look under "Speakers" for "[Review] LSiM 703 Review".  It's completely worth your while to find the thread and read it.

After a listening session with the 703's, I must say that if this isn't the best bookshelf speaker Polk has ever made, then there must be something rare and special out there that I haven't heard yet. These tiny beasts will put many full towers to shame. They are enough to fill small/mid-sized rooms with sound and leave 99% without the desire to add a sub. Its phenomenal to me that such a compact speaker can move so much air, and sound superb doing it.

These are semi-laid back speakers with superb midrange and dig low enough to raise eyebrows. I don't know how many hours these had on them, but I noticed no break-up or distortion at any volume. The imaging seemed to remain crisp and the lower bass notes outside of their range seemed to just roll off nicely. A lot of this surely has to be credited to the 6.5" mid-bass driver. This sucker MOVES and pushes a lot of air when doing so. 

These were listened to in a dedicated and treated listening room. They were powered by Consonance Cyber 8000 tube power amps (~75 wpc), a Belles 21A pre, and a Virtue Audio Piano M1 CD player.

It is beyond my non-engineer background how Polk can obtain the sound these "bookshelf" speakers can produce.  I am replacing my old PSW 100 sub soon.  Pulled these out of the best packaging I have ever seen, love the cloth shroud and thick styro at. al.  Next hooked them up to older Sony ES amp and ES disc changer and immediately was so happy I ordered direct and paid half the big box store price.  Surprisingly punchy bass and mids for an enclosure, absolutely beautiful midnight black, and crisp highs.  
My brother bought a pair of Elac towers and these sound better than those.  Cannot wait to pair them with a newer sub, not sure which Polk I will purchase, but likely a 10" or 12"(large 25' x 15' great room).  Kudos to your engineering team and I await my newest sound experience.  Oh! I may need another pair before they are gone and some quality stands so my guest can see what they are hearing!!!

Old S6 Replacements

I have now owned these for round about a year. I really wanted to give them time to settle in with me and make sure my review was true to life and not my initial wow. 

My listening area is far from perfect. A raised foundation that wants to resonate, acoustics that aren't bad yet not to die for, and hard to set up a real listening position. 

The source unit I have powering these also leaves lots to be desired. However with no eq these things are stellar. I after 3 or 4 months added a tiny boost in the 80 to 60 Hz range and stuck with that. These speakers hold their own on the low end. The highs are extremely detailed but not fatigueing. I have noticed details in music I haven't heard before or had found difficult to separate. 

The finish on these (midnight mohogany) was not as gloss as I had expected from pictures but is still fantastic none the less. The cabinet work really shows the effort and craftsmanship put into this line. I hope to own a set of 707 when I get the space but I will not be getting rid of these.

Stellar sound even in the harshest conditions

The first thing you'll notice right out of the box is the absolute first-rate build quality of these speakers.  They are a work off art and I haven't seen anything in their price range that's close.  I have the cherry finsih and they are simply gorgeous speakers to look at.  I'm happy to say they sound as good as they look!  The highs are wonderful, detailed yet buttery smooth with lots of natural decay on cymbals.  The mids are wonderful, warm, and liquid.  I have a lot of tubes in my system that lends itself to this lush, liguid mid-range.  The bass is very impressive, especially for a bookshelf.  The 703s replaced a pretty well known and respected set of vintage towers and they actually have more mid-bass slam, are more detailed, and have more low end extension and weight than my towers.  It's hard to believe the sound that comes form these bookshelfs.  The soundstage and imaging are also very good.  Out of the box they were just ok in these regards, but after about 80 hrs. break-in, they opened up greatly. The soundstage is now wide and deep, with a very three-dimensional, life-like sound.  The soundstage is not quite as wide and deep as my vintage towers, but it's very close.  The towers were known for their exceptional sound-stage however, so the fact that the 703s are clsoe says volumes.  The imaging is also very precise within the soundstage.  I love these speakers.  They are winners.  Give them a try, you wont be sorry.

In terms of build quality, one can easily see the effort Polk put into these. The cabinets are top notch, the magnetic grills are certainly a nice touch,  and the binding posts smack of high end audio fit and finish you see on much more expensive speakers.   The Aluminum plate the binding posts are mounted to instead of the usual plastic terminal cup you see also exude a high end look.

Thankfully,  the sound quality matches it's look.  Crystal clear highs without being bright.  The detail on the high end is definitely something of note.  The soundstage from top to bottom these things present,  for a bookshelf,  are surprisingly wide.  They also dig pretty deep bass wise for any speaker, much less a bookshelf.  A little less warm than the departing LSi9 it will be replacing but in a good way.  Even with the more neutral voicing and increased detail,  there isn't a hint of listeners fatigue....and trust me, I listened to them loud enough to try to find it.      

Yes,  some will look a the price and see they are a notch up from the older LSi price point....but you can definitely see why as soon as you take these out of the box.  

Want LSim quality without breaking the bank on the towers?  these will fill all but the largest rooms......and even then...

If you go through enough speaker upgrades, you experience new levels of detail.

I'd been doubling my set up as both Home Theater and 2 ch listening.
I spent some time grooming the RTiA 9 tower to perform in 2ch mode i.e; external amplification, dedicated CD player, shielded cables with silver connectors, speaker placement with room treatments and presto, music sounded really great! The RTiA 9 sounded incredible in a 2ch set up.

I was confident that a blind buy on the 703's would be a good thing and they didn't disappoint. With the new 703's placed next to the A9's, with their own cables and amplification, I was able to do an A/B comparison easy enough.

Oddly enough, through blind testing, my wife preferred the sound of the A9 over the 703 even though she admitted there was a new layer of detail uncovered through the 703.

For me, the 703 edged out the A9 only marginally in detail but still came out ahead none the less.

Another assessment worth noting during the comparison, the 703 puts out very impressive bass! Next to the A9's three impressive 7" woofers per cabinet, you wouldn't expect the single mid/woofer of the 703 to have any significant impact, wrong! The 703 puts out mysteriously impressive bass! That, combined with the incredible detail and clarity of the midrange driver and tweeter, the 703 "clearly" earned it's place in my dedicated 2ch set up! 

Also worth noting, packaging is 1st class. The cabinets have their own "hoodie" and are incased in the usual Polk packaging style of thick molded Styrofoam blocks placed in extra thick cardboard boxes. The styling of the cabinets are also 1st class all the way down to the heat shrunk covered jumper cables on the binding posts.

I've used the 703's as mains in my theater set up just to see. The results; no matter what you put through the 703's, the sound is, in a word, delightful!

A New Layer of Detail

I have had my Lsi 15's for 5 years and still love them.Justed wanted to give the "M" series a try.Still in the break-in period,Very clean,accurate and certainly a step up over the Lsi's...I recommend a sub for rock and movies.But you can say that for every true bookshelf speaker.Professional reviews were very accurate in their assessment of this speaker.Please use a top receiver or better yet a power amp to bring out the full potential..The more power you feed them,the better they sound.Running a SVS PB-13 Ultra for the low end and set crossover @100hz to allow the top end a clean,tight punch.

Big soundstage From The 703's...

These speakers replaced LSi 9's in my computer room which is a small 11x11 room with 12' ceilings.  System consists of a NAD 116 Preamp, Grant Fidelity B-283 Tube Buffer, Carver TFM-55 amp, Rotel RCD-1072 CD player, Pro-ject Debut iii Turntable, and a Squeezebox.
  
I was a big fan of my LSi 9's, but they are no match for the 703's.  I honestly have to say that they do everything better than the 9's, including looking better when they are not even turned on.  I have the midnight mahogany finish and it matches very well with the other furniture in my room.

These speakers are top-notch from the time you open the box as even the packaging is first rate.  They are a beautiful, well-made, high-end looking speaker.  I love the magnetic grill which is a simple, nice touch.

Out of the box these speakers sound fantastic, but they do get even better with a little break in.  I'm happy to read in a previous review that they really open up after about 80 hours because I'm at about 40 hours right no and I think they are phenomenal.  If you are in the market for a pair of speakers in this price range, I highly recommend you give them a listen.  They may not be for you, but you should at least hear them to decide.
