You have to run the audio out from your TV into the AUX input on the device. Set the device input to AUX and you will hear your TV sound.

Technically, a "Smart" TV is like a hybrid between a computer, set-top boxes and a TV that has integrated internet and web 2.0 capabilities that allow you to connect to your home network, get internet access and stream movies, social media amongst many other capabilities.
Adding a unit such as LG's BH5140S Smart 3D Blu-ray Home Theater System which is DLNA certified giving you the ability to connect to your Home Network, and pre-installed Apps that allow you to access various online services like streaming movies etc., or having the ability to get internet and download more apps via LG's Smart World App store definitely makes your TV "smart".
The BH5140S does not have wireless Wi-Fi capabilities, but you can get Wi-Fi via the Ethernet port so you will need to have your router in close proximity to avoid having to run lengths of wire throughout the house to connect to your system. This is definitely one way to improve the sound quality of your TV's audio, add smart capabilities to it and also have a CD/DVD/Blu-ray player all in one unit. It's a great choice!...IFV

No, a smart TV is not needed in order to use the web-based apps such as Netflix and YouTube. The device has an Ethernet port which connects it to the Internet, and then outputs the signal to your TV via HDMI cable. It is also a DLNA certified device that comes with a PC software disc which will allow you to share videos, music, and photos from any DLNA certified device that stores media files that is on your home network.

The LG BH5140S, Smart 3D Blu-ray Home Theater connects via the Auxiliary L/R inputs, it can connect via the Portable Audio 3.5mm jack input, it has a USB port for connection to external Hard Drives and USB devices, it has an Ethernet port for DLNA connectivity and has an HDMI output for connection to your TV. It does not however, have an Optical port on it!...IFV

While I am certainly no audio expert, I have owned a few different surround sound systems before. Mostly recently, I owned a Samsung HT-E550 1000 watt DVD surround sound system.

Honestly, for just a little more money, this LG system is a much better deal. Don't let the 500 watts fool you into thinking it's not as 'loud' as my previous 1000 watt unit; if anything, this LG system is louder.

So, on top of great surround sound, you also have a 3d blu-ray player. If you don't need a fancy system and have a small to medium sized room, this LG system will suit you well!

Excellent, affordable surround sound system.

The system works well the sound matches higher priced systems. I have put 2 in and getting ready to install a 3rd. The only drawback is it is not wireless for using the Netflix etc.

Home theater system

I checked it online on LG official site. It was $299. i got it by Walmart much cheaper and excepted delivery was sooner than I excepted. It is a really great home theater system. it worth more than its price.

Blu Ray LG Theatre System

For months I've been looking for an LG soundbar and 3D blu-ray player package. I recently purchased an LG 3D tv and was looking for a perfect pairing. I currently have a similar setup at 1000 watts Samsung surround sound, but no 3D blu-ray. I just happened to stumble upon this one in store and the speaker setup fit better in my entertainment center than a soundbar and had 4x's the power! I also ordered it online for $20 less and did site to store. Picture and sound are within what I expected. Superior base from the sub. I just wish they had a wireless or bluetooth setup for the rear speakers like my current setup. This will make for many great movie nights.

Great package getting me all I was looking for

Great sound with a great price.  Very easy to install. Comes with HDMI and optical outputs, and a blue ray player. The speakers are small but very robust.  The sound quality is simply amazing. Highly Recommended.  I have Dish and a LG TV and had this hooked up in probably under 20 minutes.  You simply can't go wrong with this system.

Outstanding Stereo System

I purchased this unit to replace an RCA sound system. This home theater has a very good quality tone, especially a very nice low end. The sound resonates throughout the room and is crisp and clear.
Setting up was a breeze.
I only wish this was blue tooth capable so that my kids could play their song lists from their phones.

Very nice for the money

May be good for smaller room. BluRay disk player and other features are good but wired speakers are tiny.  Brought this back and bought LG SH4 sound bar with subwoofer and a separate LG blue ray disc player.  A little more money but better system. 
Walmart return was very easy.
