I have recorded several TV shows and watched most of them.
Set specific date or Set to record weekly. Start time-End time and channel.When you view the "Title List" from the menu, highlight each recording and it displays the date recorded and the length of the recording. From there you may attach a title to what you recorded.

It has a great timer. I find it easy to set up daily, weekly, m-f, and one shot recordings. For example, it records the network news every night and also 60 minutes on Sunday.

Some of the other features seem harder to do but timer recordings are not too bad.

Apparently, RodFive hasn't found that you can also PRE-TITLE timer programs so each recorded show has a Title on it in the Title List, automatically.

It's the 3rd option under the Timer Programming menu. Set a timer first, then go back in with that 3rd option to add a title for each recorded instance of that show.

Yes - that is the purpose of the unit to be able to capture video - edit / trim the video - then make a disc.

According to the manual there are a lot of features designed to record on DVDs. You can record program to to the hard drive and then edit and record to DVD. All is standard definition, not HD.

It looks easy in the manual but I've never done it.

Oops, I should have said it can't RECORD dual-layer (DL) DVDs but it can PLAY them.

i looked over the owners manual and it doesn't mention dual layer discs as a recordable option. they only list the non dual layer dvd-r/+r/+rw/-rw types. have not tried playing a dual layer disc on the unit.

The purchased Magnavox 500 GB HDD DVR / DVD recorder was the only one I could find that had a digital tuner built in, and at a reasonable price.
Unit arrived within several days, intact in original box via FedEx ground.
I opened and quickly installed, replacing a LiteOn DVD recorder with separate digital tuner from the conversion days to digital channels. The Magnavox unit is great with the tuner built in, as it will change channels automatically ( old setup required leaving tuner on 1 channel for the prearrange recording time and only option of recording to DVD). With the Magnavox. recording can be to either HDD or DVD, and if timer recording to DVD and space runs out, it automatically switches to HDD recording. One inconvenient difference to a Tivo or DirecTV DVR is that recordings are only labeled with date and time, not the name of show, date, time. Separate recordings can be renamed in "Edit" mode, but if you record a lot of shows and leave on the HDD for any length of time, you might want to write down a list of show name, date and time to avoid having to start viewing a show to see which it is.
Be certain to thoroughly read the accompanying manual, as the detailed operations are many, and all of the remote control functions are not confined to just one push of a label button, but can open another window with multiple additional choices. From experience with my previous DVD recorder, pay attention to and use the recommended brands of DVD discs to avoid disappointment of the DVD recorder not functioning with a different brand that's not on the list of approved brands.

We like this one better than the ones that come with cable service; dropped cable service and just use over the air antenna digital TV and find both of our units flawless and more than adequate. Get used to the text mechanics and it is fully functional.

Arived fast! Set up was easy. Remote control easy

Very pleased with this product. It meets and exceeds my expectations. Only product I could find on the market that has a built in tuner for those of us who rely on off the air TV. Probably did not need to buy the model with 500GB drive but the cost difference was slight and more is always better. I bought the refirb model and other than a poor quality xerox manual, it can not be told from new. I have not tried to dub onto a DVD yet, but have tested the DVD as a player. It is almost impossible to give a stored recording a name other than date and time, which may be inconvenient for one who plans to store a lot on the drive. I do not.

I got this to use as a QAM tuner and DVR and it works great for that purpose. The internal Hard drive is excellent to be able to store programs and to do some 'trimming' of content to edit out commercials and that before burning to a disc to archive.

I do wish there would be a way to make favorite channels or to label them but for now I am just happy to be able to see and record them directly.

Worth Buying

Having already a similar model, I puchased this one as a back up unit.
My older model gives a darker picture than broadcasted but this new one does not do that. I encourage anyone purchasing any equipment such as this to get the cheap insurance offered by Sam's Club / Walmart.
I like the fact that the machine can play PAL discs sent from friends from Europe as the latest 'sophisticated' equipment (such my Sony players) will not play PAL.

I tried for hours to connect it to my TV. I eventually had to go through my old VCR RCA-cables input then out to the TV. The coaxial output from the machine does not play the DVD, channel select or even menu. Only if sent through the RCA plug outputs, (Video=Yellow, Right-Speaker=Red and Left-Speaker=White) into my old VCR then I could use the coaxial output to go to the back of my TV set.
It will digitally store over 900 hours of recorded shows off the TV. Programming is easy to setup. Even recording at the longest play option, the sound and picture are good. I have already recorded several shows and watched most. Other than adjusting the clock so not to clip the last few seconds off the program (my error) this has worked perfectly for my needs so far.
I haven't tried to record to the DVD-ReWriter, yet.
It plays professional DVDs perfectly. I experimented with "Lava Girl and Shark Boy, in 3D" using the glasses with red and blue lenses. I'm happy with the results. If you are aware of the issues above (so not surprised before you buy this product) then I'm sure you'll be happy, too.
I trusted the name, Magnavox due to past purchases. I was not disappointed this time, either.

Complicated but worth it.

I've been looking for a hard drive based recorder on and off for a few years now. Generally when I research them I find few models available and there always seems to be something lacking so I don't buy. This one had good reviews so I gave in and bought one. So far it is filling my needs very well. It is fairly intuitive in its operation. After going through the manual once or twice I was able to set up daily, weekly and one shot programs and erase them at will. The fast forward works well to skip commercials and stops on a dime so you miss very little when you resume play. My needs are pretty basic so for me, the ease of setting up recordings, skipping commercials, and erasing recorded shows is reason enough to buy it. But there is more. If you watch shows using its tuner, it automatically makes a recording of whatever your tuned to so you can replay whatever you want.

So why didn't I give it 5 stars? Well the biggest drawback to this device is that it doesn't tune or record in HD. When you replay shows from the hard drive they will not be in HD and in my case, it won't fill the entire screen. It does have 720 and 1080 output but its not HD and there is no format setting on my tv that displays the entire video full screen without cutting something off.

There are a few other 'Issues' like, the remote won't control a tv, just itself. Once your playing something back, hitting menu does nothing.

I still recommend it however since its allows me to record and watch shows easily and it allows me to skip commercials. I don't watch a lot of tv so its hard to justify cable but when I do, I now have something available to watch which ive recorded off an antenna and I can skip the annoying ads.

Pretty good recorder

Unit was the best choice available for time-shifting broadcast (over-the-air) programming. Wish it had come with Blu-Ray burner instead of 'normal' DVD RW, though no local 1080p broadcasts in area yet. Instruction manual not as clear as some, but you can dig out the information with reading & the unit in front of you. I'd get one for my spouse, if she wanted one.
