That is the machine I have (Dell Inspiron 17.3) and the fit is very good, with room to spare.

The backpack I ordered is as described from a size standpoint and from the number of compartments.  I have had good luck with the durability of my previous two Targus backpacks and the new one looks to be of similar quality.

Third Targus Backpack

Good strong/sturdy design. Looks nice. Holds everything well. Very functional. I actually like it. Also, it actually holds a water-bottle in the side pouch, unlike many backpacks of its type. It's a little taller than I expected. I bought it for school and so far, other than it being a little taller than I would have liked, it's GREAT!

I bought a shoulder trap case for my 17" laptop thinking that was the only option for my large laptop. The case was too big. The laptop slid around and wasn't secure.
