The Sony/Philips digital interface format provides for a digital optical audio signal, commonly referred to as Toslink. Toslink allows for the distribution of uncompressed 2-channel PCM audio or compressed multichannel audio, such as DTS or Dolby 5.1 or 7.1. Being an optical signal, Toslink is immune to problems that can plague electrical signals, such as crosstalk, magnetic interference, or radio frequency interference. This premium cable features a full-sized Toslink connector on each end, with metal connector heads and a metal mesh jacket. After trying to hook up my new Monoprice soundbar (with wireless sub) to my 11 year old Philips HDTV I was a little frustrated that the options on the soundbar didn't really help me to produce the expected quality sound using HDMI and other AV results from the older HDTV. The solution was within this Digital Optical Audio Cable! I could now experience sound that surpassed the HDTV's built-in speakers. This cable, although a little longer than what I needed for proper connection of HDTV to soundbar, easily coiled out of the way without sacrificing audio output. I only wish that the printed material with the soundbar had recommended this cable more strongly.

They're cables, there is not that much to say about what they do.  They may not perform any better than cables with plastic ends, but the metallic sheathing and metal connectors make them feel indestructible.  I've seen comments about them being hard to attach -- they do require more force than RCA connectors, but they snap in securely.  Recommended.

Premium cables at standard cable price

This is one of Monoprices better products.. The connection is tight and secure, the cable is substantial , the covering is functional and looks good, made of good quality material.. The sound is of great quality in two channel audio. This product and optical in general is not able to carry adequate information for 5.1, 7.1, or 9.1 audio and such. If your doing two channel or for headphones, this is a real winner.

Best optical cable for your money on a budget.

I'm using this optical cable for connecting my wireless headphones base to my tv. Works flawlessly.  The heads on the cable are little bit too big. Tight squeeze for small input areas. Cable is made well and seems more durable then most of the optical cables I've seen to date.

Heavy duty optical cable.

This is an absolutely beautiful cable... it's quite flexible too.  The caps at each end of the cable could perhaps be a bit more robust.  Also, the plug itself is quite large, which may be a problem for some devices, although it wasn't for me.  I am very happy.

Well Made, good price, fairly quick shipping! I am pleased with all my Monoprice cable purchases so far. This is the first place I go to for audio cabling.

Very heavy and seemingly durable cable; excellent price. Had to wait a while for delivery. Works as expected. Protective caps are attached at each end, but I don't anticipate using them because I just leAve the cable plugged in between my TV and sound bar.

Good cable and good quality.  My only reason for not giving 5 stars, is that the squarw metal end is pretty bulky. I was running it through a pvc conduit and it kept getting snagged. I ended up grinding it down to make it work. If you're not pulling it through anything, it's a great cable.

Good cable

The cable itself seems very high quality, but for seemingly no functional reason it has oversized cubed ends that prevent it from sliding in to recessed SPDIF ports - including Monoprice's own keystone jacks. I dremeled off the corners of the first two "rings" and it was finally able to slide in to the ports.

Won't work in recessed ports without modification

This audio cable outwardly looks impressive but optical cables do not need better shielding. They are just bulkier and more difficult to work with. Furthermore, the ends on my mine kept coming off (something that never happened with the less expensive cables) and eventually became unusable. The less-expensive cables Monoprice offers are actually more reliable and less difficult to work with. I cannot recommend these.
