It is an infrared receiver. Most people will use these headphones with their DVD system in their car. Minivans are prone to having a system whereby the driver can listen to music and the passengers can put headphones on and listen to what is playing on the monitor. These headphone will need a transmitter.

I bought these for a road trip and the sound was great, but they are listed as being 2 channel and they are not.

I was so excited to get these..and at a great price! However, after opening and getting them in the car with the kiddos....we found that they are only a single channel headphone! So sad I had to return them!

On the flip side, if you want a single channel headphone, these are perfect!

I bought this since it states in the title 2-Channel which is what I need. I did in store pick up waited 20 minutes to get it and brought it home only to open it and realize it is only ONE channel. It would have saved me a lot of time if the title on this website was correct.
