You shouldn't . If you are currently using a head set with your computer w/o having to turn it on and off these speakers will work the same. There is no sofware to install, so it should be the same as plugging in a personal headset.

I think it would be best to turn your Computer off, for safety reasons.

Nope. Just keep unit off, then turn it back on, otherwise you'll get unexpected (but not dangerous) pops and crackles.

On 3/10/2017 I plugged these speakers into my 3.5 mm input on my computer while the computer was on and had absolutely no issues!  Works great!!
