I have an old RCA tv so I use an RF modulator. I hooked up my Philips Dvd/Vcr without any probs, but then I dont have Direct TV. I just inserted the jacks, that are already connected by cable to my RF modulator, into the dvd/vcr holes in the back & it worked perfectly fine.
Id call Direct TV & ask them to help u install it if u cant figure it out urself. Or go online to Direct TVs support information. Hope this helps.

If you haven't got an answer for this, here is mine. If there's a place on the back of this unit that accepts a coax cable (which I doubt because other questions ask about external tuners), then you put the coax cable from the sat. receiver to the "in" on the vcr/dvd unit and then another coax to the tv. vcrs have to have the tv programming signal directly rather than other ways. If there isn't a place on vcr/dvd unit that accepts a coax cable, try using a dvd cable (3 prong, color coded) from sat. receiver to same color coded inputs on vcr/dvd and then another dvd cable from vcr/dvd output to rf modulator, then a coax cable from rf modulator to tv. This way you can record "Ch. 3." Just select future programs on sat. receiver to come on at the given time and day.

It depends on what "service" you have. When I had cable, I was able to record one channel while watching another one. Now that I have Direct TV, you must have your "receiver" on the channel you want to record (vcr is set to record channel 3).

Can you record one channel while watching another one?

I can watch TV right now through mine, but to watch the digital in the future you just need to get the converter box.

great buy! works perfectly. easy hookup. only needed the white, yellow, red cord to connect to the tv. everything to hookup is in the box. i didn't have to go buy any other cords. just be sure the colored wires are place in the right plugs on the tv. i tried the front, but that wasn't right. after buying other cords and returning them, i found the right plugs in the back of the tv.

Worth every penny~ this is an excellent little quality item~

VCR plays perfect in HI FI stereo and the DVD player does it all~ when you turn off the dvd it FINDS THE SPOT YOU WERE AT~ COOL~
** MY ONLY SUGGESTION IS THEY NEED A BIGGER REMOTE~ BUT THAT MY ONLY SUGGESTION~ I WILL BUY MORE OF THESE BECAUSE IT IS HARD TO FIND a good quality VCR/DVD combo~ and I will replace the old one in the Family Room with this great item~

BEST VCR / DVD player I have EVER OWNED~

I have had two of the phillips vcr/dvd player and both of them have had problems after about 6 months use either sticking (the dvd drawer) not wanting to open or the dvd skip when you play them. The players are not that expensive so I guess you get what you pay for .
If you are wanting a system that last a long time , this is not the one to buy, but if you want one that is for use in the kids room then this one will do fine.

I don't understand when you buy a product, that everthing you need to install it isn't included in the box. We had to make two trips to the store to get the correct cables to install player which were NOT INCLUDED! If you need to raise the price OK, just have what we need to make the machine work.

Frustrated in Tulsa

very disappointed in this product. Got it hooked up and only used it for a few days because when playing a tape back it would make terrible screetching noises that was so loud you could hardly hear what you were watching. It also made this sound when you were taping something. Must have been something wrong with the belts or the heads on the vcr part of the machine. Otherwise it was very eassy to hook up and also to operate. Returned it immediately.

I had originally been looking for a VCR. Just a VCR. Then discovered that apparently, you can only get them in a combo like this. So, I browsed around, and many of them had the feature of converting VHS tapes to DVDs. I grew excited upon finding this product, thinking it fell into that category. I was led on by the poor phrasing in the item description and features. I bought this for my husband for Christmas, thinking I'd gotten a GREAT deal on a great piece of technology. Now, a week later after opening and installing it, I tried to record one of my tapes to DVD. After scouring the manual, I discovered that it doesn't convert VHS tapes to DVD. However, it DOES convert DVDs (non-copyrighted ones of course) to VHS. Whoopie. Why on EARTH someone would convert FROM DVD TO VHS is beyond me. I am very angry and frustrated, and honestly can't afford to return it and upgrade to one of the $150 machines that performs the tasks I wanted it to. As a basic DVD/VHS combo player, it's fine. Plays nice, good quality. If you're just looking for something to watch your old VHS tapes on, as well as your new DVDs, this is a great product. If you're looking to transfer your VHS tapes to DVDs, DO NOT BUY!

Horridly Misleading Description!

This product is tunerless, meaning that if you want to tape tv shows, you have to buy a separate tuner for it. If the online product description had disclosed that, I never would've bought it in the first place. Fortunately, it said on the box that it was tunerless, so I was able to return it IMMEDIATELY without opening it.

A useless hunk

Bought online, horizontal lines on VCR playback. The excange was a local store. It works greaT, So good I purchased another one, this one also displayshorizontal lines on layback. Wish they oinly mad VCR recorders. VCR DVD combos are loaded with too many butttons. Soon VCRs will be gone..

Had to exchange for another

This product worked for the first two days and then the auto tracking stopped working on the vcr part of the machine. When I tried to do manual tracking that didn't seem to do a thing for it either. I tried 7 different video tapes. My old vcr / dvd player lasted 8 years of constant use and was also a Philips. This product was a big disappointment.
