When I first got my charcoal grill I’ll be honest I didn’t really know what I was doing and would often resort to dumping lighter fluid all over the coals to get them going. This prime six charcoal is a much more sophisticated option. The use of a chimney starter is best (not included), and the Prime 6 charcoal bricks can be stacked vertically inside. In my photo you’ll see a few extra pieces hanging out the top. Starting a small fire underneath allows the coals at the bottom to heat up. Once they’re at a good smolder you just dump it in, put down the grate on top, and you’re ready to cook. Used this charcoal for my Memorial Day barbecue and it was great. The size of the bricks makes them easy to move around as well. Cooked all the food to perfection!

Superior charcoal

I recently got a fire pit. I thought I’d try this little wood fire makers. It quick to start, and lasts a long time to keep us warm. Didn’t use them for grilling yet, but it’s a nice alternative to heavy charcoal bags. Amazing how it leaves no residue. A great new invention. The package weights 9 lbs, but it supposed to last like a 30 lb bag of charcoal.

Light to carry, and lasts a long time!

No smoke and pure hardwood charcoal that burns for a long time makes this perfect for anyone with a charcoal BBQ that wants long slow cooking (turkey, hams, ribs, whole chickens, etc). This 9 lb box of 6" lengths of charcoal is equivalent to 37 lbs of regular charcoal, so it can be cost effective. Each charcoal stick burns for a long time, which lets you forget about having to check your BBQ every hour. I like that it is clean and easy to handle, uniform in size, and easy to light. The box of charcoal is packaged well, and you won't have any waste with small pieces. No chemicals, sustainable, and easy to use.

Enviroment Friendly substainable Charcoal

This didn’t look like a whole lot when you get it but it burns soooo hot that you don’t need much to cook with. No additives to this makes it perfect for someone with autoimmune issues that can’t take inflammation with your other common charcoal. This can be used to sear, cook or use indirectly for a slow and low approach. It will burn for 6 hours. It’s kind of hard to light at first but once lit, it’s lit. They say it is comparable to a 30 pound bag, you can believe that. This is a premium charcoal log that burns clean. These logs seem to be for the serious griller. I’m serious about my bbq. I suggest getting a starter to go with your logs to assist in lighting.

I was kind of skeptical at first...

I am not a huge fan of charcoal. Normally use actual wood logs or pellets. These were offered to me and i had some fajitas to cook in my self made disk cooker. Figured they would work great for this, and they did. They are not really for adding flavor to food, so don't expect that from them. But they put out a good amount of heat and little to no smoke. Very tightly compressed, with a hole through the center. This hole helps with a good clean and hot burn. Low ash content, so less cleanup after a cook. If you are looking for charcoal that has good heat, low ash, and smoke, this is the one for you. I live in the country so smoke doesn't bother no one. But for you city folks that have sensitive neighbors, these will work.

Long lasting

First let me say I like that it is not saturated with petrochemicals. Now, for me, that is the main or almost only thing that really sets this apart from other charcoal. I do not have the patience to light this. With other lump charcoal I can use simple paper methods to lite my fire. With this one, I tried my usual paper, then tried the chimney with paper then had to revert to a fire starter (I reserve those for true camping) and got some burn going on. It does burn well and cooks, I do not see the use for its claim of reusing as proper grilling we want the coals to get a good consistent heat then break up the pile and spread them out. This Charcoal tries to change the way I have been cooking over coals and that just isn't for me. That said, the flavor is clean and if you are wanting to be more sustainable grill I would say its for you. Lastly be aware this did not make it fully intact so delivery might be an issue, now the instructions do suggest to break them apart so not a big deal really, but then that brings it back to small pieces like other lump charcoal. I do see the benefit of the shape for air circulation but then if your old school griller like me that isn't a huge benefit as I see it.

Patience required

This Charcoal works very good, stays lit for quite awhile afterwards and remains hot. It cooks very well, doesn't have any chemical type smell, food was cooked and delicious. I recommend this Charcoal, this 9 pound bag should last for a awhile considering it doesn't take many pieces to use at a time.

What a neat idea! The Prime 6 Long Burning Sustainable Charcoal arrives in a very nice box with an attached handle for easy carrying. I will say that the package was sent well wrapped but some charcoal was damaged during shipping but I’m sure that is to be expected. I thought the box itself was a little “fancy” and could be packaged in a more economical way. The bricks light easily and burn as they are advertised. Would be really good for a low cooking point that requires hours of cooking time like a brisket or the like. Very pleased with the product, would purchase again for sure!

What a neat idea!

This is a very unique form of "charcoal" that is made from compressed, carbonized sawdust. It's meant to be a more eco-friendly version of the usual briquettes. That's where the cool part ends, at least for someone used to using regular briquettes!

It's a bit hard to find the instructions from among all of the other stuff printed on the box, and sure enough, I missed 'em until I'd already started the fire. I did notice a panel suggesting three different fuel-less starting methods, but since I wasn't and never will be interested in waiting an hour to start barbecuing, I tried to light them the same way I'd do any other kind of coals. I sprayed them down with good old-fashioned lighter fluid and flicked my Bic.

Fifteen minutes later, I had...nothing. The fire of the fluid had gone out completely and the grill was now cold to the touch. Frustrated, I got out some real charcoal briquettes, threw them in with these, re-sprayed it all, and flicked my Bic again. THEN I had some action. Fifteen minutes after the re-do, the real charcoal was going great guns. Unfortunately, even with all of that heat now present, these Prime 6 sticks were - with the exception of just two of them - still stone out. I would rate this product a zero, but I figure that some people who are used to the "chimney starting method" may have better luck. I have no experience with that, and since regular charcoal has always worked great for me, I wasn't interested in fooling around trying to figure it out now.

Speaking of those instructions, they say to break these into 2.5-inch blocks. These come as extremely long, multi-sided sticks. It would be a big hassle to try to break them to that small of a size. The smallest I got one was about 4 inches. Below that, it'd be hard to get the needed leverage. I really find it irksome when a company is too lazy to make its product be the right size, right out of the box.

Not for Me

I waited to review this charcoal product after 
lighting and cooking process.
We tried lighting without charcoal starter
Because if it is to be chemical free, it 
defeats the purpose of lighter fluid. WELL IT DID’NT ,
ATTEMPT TO LIGHT.
 Sooo. We doused it with charcoal lighter, waited 
and it went out.
 Attempted again 
And I thought it went out after lighter burned off.
..but when I felt of it, it was hot. Only one brick 
looked to be charred but they were
 hot. Remember us old school think it is supposed 
to smoke like a freight train!!
If you had a propane flame to light it on I suppose 
it would light...or an electric charcoal lighter.
But there was still no flame...but some heat....
 I will use this to add to my existing fire or use it in 
My fire pit, but keep purchasing Kingsford or use real 
wood.
