The manual states to unplug the charger from AC electrical power before starting the engine to avoid possible damage to the charger. I do not do this, so far without damage. You can leave the charger connected to the battery while the engine is running.

I have the same question -- How did you make out with this?  The instructions specifically (and insanely I might add) state to unplug the unit from AC (ok, fair enough), but then disconnect both ring terminals after charging is complete (section 12.9, page 10 of Operating Instructions)?  If that&#39;s the case, then whats the point of installing this?  In that situation it would be only good for folks that are storing something for months at a time (and even for them alligator clips would make more sense) as opposed to what I am trying to do, which is keep a battery maintained in a car that is only used about once a week for a short grocery trip (not enough of a trip to charge the battery)

I haven't tried this charger yet; but it seems to be a lighter weight model and would be easier to carry around compared to two of the other Schumacher chargers that I have. I purchased one a few years ago and works good; and I just purchased another one because of the clamps for the battery terminals. I haven't tried that one yet either; but it was lower in cost than the one for this review.

Schumacher 1.5 Amp Fully Automatic On-board M-C

The battery in my riding lawn mower was draining because of the +100°F temps. The battery was 1 year old & my old battery charger was only charging enough for one start. I purchased the Schumacher SE8 charger because it worked automatically, turned off when fully charged & had a maintenance feature. It charged my battery in a couple hours & I had my mowing done in record time. This is a product I can wholeheartedly recommend.

I don't drive it a lot, so my battery never gets fully charged
Check your battery water level first
After 24 hours the light was still red, I wasn't sure
But finally after 48 hours the light was green
Mine is mounted under the hood, I used zip ties and carpet under lay as a cushion
Minus 20 C in Calgary, did not plug in the block heater, the battery juice started with out a problem
Now I will use as a battery tender

The Little Engine that Could 1.5 amps

It was very easy to attach and is working great. It's met all of my expectations.

Easy Set-up

I had purchase one about 11 years ago and it worked great. But, my older died so I purchased this one. The nice thing about this one seems to be that it is lighter that the old model. It appears to be completely digital.

OK (but not great) automatic battery trickle charger. It does the job well - topping-off the battery and keeping it fully charged between infrequent uses. I'm disappointed that it claims to be only "water-resistent" and advises you to keep it out of the rain. I was hoping it was sealed and potted so I could permanently install it on my bulldozer. It also states to disconnect it before starting the engine - this is a major inconvenience for me and I deducted 2 stars. I have an older Schumacher version of this same charger that has none of these limitations.

OK automatic battery trickle charger

I made a very temporary connection to test the unit, which is still charging after nearly three hours. That is why I wanted the unit, so my battery could be maintained at full charge. Only problem is going to be finding the room in my car to mount the unit permanently under the hood. The under-battery bracket will likely do the job, but I will wait until my son is available to give me a hand with the installation.

Some may have difficulty installing the unit.

I bought it to recharge my deep charge battery for my travel trailer and it does a great job for what I paid. I used it to charge my riding mower battery also and worked perfectly. I don't plan on mounting it permanent, so I can't verify how it will hold up in the weather. I modified it slightly by removing screw downs and installing quick disconnects.It works great for me.
