It is a amazing machine.  It is very smooth and quiet.  It gives you A great workout.

The rower is great so far. Arrived early, packed well, perfect shape, super easy final assembly. It has plenty of resistance for my wife and I and I like the water sound. Not loud at all, and I agree the sound is pleasant. The electronics/display lack a little, but I don't pay much attention to anything but time and stroke count anyway, and it does those well. 
The seat is perfectly comfortable as is,  suggest a cover if you are using on a patio or outdoors.

Exactly what I hoped it would be.

This is a very nice rowing machine. I thought it was aluminum but it is actually tubular steel painted white. It is very substantial and the double rail for the seat is very stable. It can be lifted to near vertical for moving around but might be a little heavy for smaller users ( not to be moved by kids certainly ). It sits vertically when not in use. The only delicate part is the control module and you will want to be careful when moving and storing it not to hit this part. Seems to have some quite extensive and flexible program options. So far I am just using the set distance programs of 2km and 5km, approximately a 10 minute and 25 minute workout. One concern is the foot straps. You need to make sure your shoes protect you from the hard plastic in the Achilles area. Resistance is set by how full the water tank is and I filled it to three of six ( wife and her sister will be using it so I didn't want to go too macho ). Getting water in and out of the tank to adjust resistance isn't really very practical but that's what real rowing is like, pull harder and pull more quickly if you want a harder workout.

I had two issues leading to warranty claims:

1) From Factory -- Rowing machine belt was frayed from the factory.  My warranty claim and replacement process was simple and efficient.  At-home service was required to replace it, but the technician was a knowledgeable professional.  Resolved.

2). At 7 weeks -- Computer exhibited an intermittent freeze/lock-up problem.  My second warranty claim process was again totally fluid.  Ashley B. @ Xterra's Customer Service was amazing.  I submitted my online claim and Ashley responded in less than 24 hours.  I received a replacement computer (user-serviceable component) that has seemed to correct the resolve the issued encountered.

For both service claims, Xterra has been available and extremely responsive by email and phone.  They are operating in a way that shows they stand behind their products, including even their consumer-grade products.  So far they have delivered-- If they hadn't, I would have returned the machine and looked elsewhere for other options.

Good product

This is a great rowing machine to improve your cardio.  You will do a lot of huffing and puffing at the beginning but give it a few weeks and you will see the improvement.  I love how the sound of water with every stroke makes it more realistic than other types of rowing machines.  Overall, I have fairly satisfied with this machine after a 12 month use.
Some cons - The display is a joke.  It is not bright enough and the contract is horrible.  It has to be in a perfect viewing angle for one to barely see the metrics on the display.  Additionally, the display stopped functioning correctly after about 7-8 months.  It keeps freezing throughout usage and stops counting your strokes, calories, etc.  It comes back and goes out on regular basis.  The only thing that keeps going without a hitch is the timer.  I tried removing the batteries to force a hard reset of the display.  It works fine a few days and then starts its cycle of freezing.  This hasn't bothered my much as I don't care about any of the metrics.  My exercises are based on time which works fine.
The major issue I encountered after month 11 was that I noticed some water leakage from the seal at the center of the tank.  It is not too much of a leak but at time it is where it makes a small puddle under the unit.  Luckily, I was still within the 12 month coverage period.  I called the Xterra Tech Support and was lucky enough to get connected with Shelly.  She was incredible.  She listened to my explanation of the problem and quickly got on it.  She worked her magic and quickly got a resolution for me.  Given it was a leakage, she informed me that Xterra was going to replace my unit with a brand new one.  Now, that's what I call standing behind your product.  She was very attentive to my needs and pushed the request through.  Shelly kept me informed and provided timely updates on every step of the process.  To my surprise, a new unit was shipped to me within 2 weeks of my initial contact with Shelly.  I have since received the new unit and it is running great.  Shelly was amazing in keeping me a satisfied Xterra customer.

One year review

I would not recommend this rower. I've been rowing for a long time and used a vertical tank in the past. Was excited but too many issues. 

1. The console stopped working after the first row. It either froze after 10 minutes, screen was on, but no keys would work or it would shut off in the middle of rowing. I triple checked wire connections and all was good.

2. The console does not let you pick which metrics to see at the same time, it has 2 screen choices. So if you opt to see split time that screen choice also shows drag. You can't see stroke rate and split time at the same time. So it's useless monitor. I tried calling customer service multiple days in a row, on hold for hours, nobody answers. I left voice mails and sent emails and never a response. Xterra is owned by Spirit so thought it would be good but nope.

3. The vertical tank rowing is not smooth at all! You can't row low stroke rates because the water can't make a full revolution and it dumps down to the bottom of tank forcing you to pull super hard. In low stroke rates it also rumbles because you're basically restarting the cycle so it shakes. The lowest stroke rate I could do to get it smooth was 22-24. It's not a quite rower like a WaterRower brand. 

After a week of not being able to get customer service on the line I returned it. Aside from the issues the construction seemed tank, solid tank, easy to put together. Just not something you want to row on unless you want to row really hard the whole time and don't care about the console showing you any data.
